Started in Tamworth, a popular market town in Staffordshire. The town takes its name from the River Tame, which flows through it. Started here with “The King’s Ditch” Micropub before heading over to “The Tamworth Tap”, CAMRA National Pub of the Year for 2 years running. Over to Lichfield next, known for its medieval 3 spire cathedral, the only one in the UK. Here I started at “The Whippet Inn” Micropub, onto “Beerbohm” and out of town for “Trinity Brew Co”. Finished with “The Bittersuite”, “Brewhouse and Kitchen” and “bod – Lichfield”.

Tamworth

The King’s Ditch

My first call in Tamworth is to “The King’s Ditch” Micropub. This opened in 2014 having been a Cycle shop beforehand. Well known for its cider selection having been a finalist in CAMRA’s national Cider Pub of the Year competition several times. A really warm welcome in here. A small room downstairs with the serving area in the corner, alongside another smaller room upstairs.

A great range of cask beers, being 4 available today, alongside a fantastic large choice of ciders. I went with “Motty” from Swadlincote based 3ps Brewery. A delicious Milkshake IPA flavoured with Key Lime Pie.

The Tamworth Tap

A short walk through Tamworth brings me to my second call here which is to the “The Tamworth Tap”. Winner of National CAMRA Pub of the Year for the last 2 years. This is also the home of Tamworth Brewing Company. A beautiful 16th Century building , with a very cost inside split over a couple of smaller rooms, with a fantastic beer garden/courtyard at the rear (also seating at the front), which is overlooked by a Saxon wall at the back. A great view of the Norman Castle as well from the courtyard.

A great line up of 8 cask beers on the bar from all over the country alongside a choice of 10 keg beers to compliment the cask beer selection. I started with “Inspired by Music” from Somerset based Fine Tuned Brewery. A delicious single hopped pale ale using Azzaca hops. I went onto “Karma Rama IPA” from Coventry based Byatt’s Brewery. A juicy session IPA with lots of flavour.

Check out the “Tamworth Town Ale Trail”. I will be back to visit some of the other pubs on this trail that I haven’t done this time. CLICK HERE to view the guide.

Lichfield

The Whippet Inn

After a short 20 minute bus ride from Tamworth to Lichfield, my first call here was to “The Whippet Inn”. A great one roomed Micropub which was formerly a dress shop and opened in 2014. Was great to see this Micropub doing well, it was full of customers this evening enjoying the selection of beers they are serving. A great warm welcome from behind the bar this evening.

A line of of 5 cask beers on the bar this evening alongside a cider. I went with “Grindleford Grit” from Derbyshire based Collyfobble Brewery. A light and refreshing pale ale using Nelson Sauvin hops.

Beerbohm

Located directly next door to The Whippet Inn is “Beerbohm”, a well designed and laid out Belgian style café bar set out over 2 floors. Lots of character around this place with chandeliers, mirrors and beer memorabilia. Hard to get a photo inside with how busy the place was, with people sat out at the front also. Even so a great warm welcome from the team behind the bar.

A choice of 4 cask beers available on the bar this evening alongside a number of keg and Belgian beer options. I went with “Session IPA” from Stourbridge based Green Duck Beer Co. A stunning session pale ale using both Mosaic and Simcoe hops. Lovely and refreshing and lots of fruity flavours.

Trinity Brew Co

My next call is slightly out of Lichfield so jumped an uber out to here. This was to “Trinity Brew Co”. These guys started out in 2020 and make some amazing beers. A great taproom housed inside the brewery with seating out at the front also. Street food vendor “Rub Me Tender” also operate on the taproom open days and the food smells delicious. A great warm welcome behind the bar this evening.

A great choice of 9 keg lines, alongside one cask beer on the bar this evening. I started with “Tangerine Scream”, a mouth-watering and refreshing sour orange pale ale, packed full of fruity flavour. I went onto their cask beer “Lichfield Pale Ale”, a great light and sessionable pale ale.

The Bittersuite

Back towards Lichfield City Station now, and just around the corner brings me to my next call which is into “The Bittersuite”. A great Micropub split over a couple of rooms and a great outdoor space, perfect for nicer weather. No bar in here so either table service or a counter to order drinks. Really nice feel in here and a great welcome from the team working this evening.

A line up of 6 cask ales for me to choose from this evening, alongside a number of ciders and lagers. I went with “Blonde” from Walsall based The Backyard Brewhouse. A crisp and hoppy blonde beer, with some great flavours coming through.

Brewhouse and Kitchen – Lichfield

A short walk brings me to the “Brewhouse and Kitchen – Lichfield”. Hosted in a former Wetherspoons, this has a 2 Barrel Brewery Kit, and offer various classes to allow you to brew your own beer and learn about how to do it. Lots of seating both inside and out in a large beer garden to the front and back.

A choice of 3 cask ales on the bar all brewed on the premises along with more on keg. I went with “Handy Man Session IPA”, A delicious sessionable light and hoppy session IPA.

A jump on the train next from Lichfield City and Lichfield Trent Valley

bod – Lichfield

A short walk from Lichfield Trent Valley brings me to “bod Lichfield”, owned by Staffordshire based Titanic Brewery, this is a great large café bar, very light and relaxing with a modern industrial theme. It serves the local housing estate. I have visited a few of these and always enjoyed my visits to them. A large venue with seating outside also.

A choice of 6 cask ales on the bar this evening, with others available on keg. 5 from their own Titanic Brewery alongside a guest ale. I went with their own “b5d”, Titanic Brewery’s Birthday Beer. A really light and tasty pale ale.
