Three Counties Rail Ale Trail
The Three Counties Rail Ale Trail links Cheshire, Derbyshire and Greater Manchester using the railway through Disley, New Mills, Marple, Romiley and Bredbury. The route includes 11 beer stops, from micropubs and brewery taps to modern craft bars. Torrside Brewing is the one stop that needs extra planning because its public taproom normally opens only on selected weekends, so check before travelling.

1. Malt Disley, Disley

Malt Disley opened in 2017 in a converted shop on Market Street. Inside, the main room is bright and comfortable, with additional space downstairs and plenty of warm wood throughout. Four changing cask ales are usually available alongside a broad keg and bottled range, with local and regional breweries regularly featured. Disley station is only a few minutes away, so it makes an easy start or finish to the trail.

2. Torrside Brewing, New Mills Newtown

Limited opening
Torrside’s public taproom normally opens on selected weekends rather than every week. Check the brewery’s current dates before planning the full trail.
Torrside Brewing was founded in 2015 and brews beside New Mills Marina. The taproom sits within the working brewery, giving the stop a very different feel from the pubs elsewhere on the trail. Its range changes constantly, with pale ales, darker beers, smoked styles and stronger specials all appearing. New Mills Newtown station is close by, but this stop depends entirely on the brewery’s published taproom dates.

3A. Torr Vale Tap, New Mills
Torr Vale Tap occupies part of the Grade II* listed Torr Vale Mill beside the River Goyt. The old industrial building keeps exposed stone, cast iron and plenty of character, while the outdoor terraces look across the gorge and river. Two changing cask ales are now available alongside several KeyKeg and keg choices, many from nearby Torrside Brewing. New Mills Central station is only a short walk away.

3B. Beer Shed, New Mills
Beer Shed opened in 2016 in a converted shop on Market Street and is split across two levels. The narrow ground-floor bar has a warm micropub feel, with extra space downstairs. It is linked with the team behind Torrside Brewing but still carries beers from a wide range of independent breweries. Four changing cask ales and a larger keg selection make this one of the strongest beer-focused stops in New Mills.

4A. The Samuel Oldknow, Marple
The Samuel Oldknow opened in 2016 and takes its name from the industrialist closely associated with Marple’s development. The pub is spread over two floors, with a covered outdoor area and plenty of traditional touches inside. Six changing cask ales are served alongside real cider, craft lager and bottled beer. It sits in the centre of Marple, around a 15-minute walk from Marple station.

4B. Bevi, Marple
Bevi sits directly beside The Samuel Oldknow on Market Street. The bar has a modern, relaxed interior with a raised seating area towards the rear and tables outside at the front. Three handpumps usually offer one regular and two changing cask ales, with keg choices alongside. Its position makes it an easy second Marple stop without adding any extra walking between venues.

4C. Dig Inn, Marple
Dig Inn combines a bar, café, record shop and gift space under the “Hops, Crops and Records” idea. Inside, the room mixes shelves of vinyl and plants with a compact bar, while there is a small outdoor area at the rear. The drinks focus is on craft keg rather than cask, with eight keg lines. It sits on Stockport Road, close to the other Marple stops.

4D. Traders, Marple
Traders, formerly Beer Traders, occupies two joined shop units on Stockport Road. The interior has an industrial look with several separate seating areas and a covered space outside. Three changing cask ales are served alongside a larger craft keg range, with local and regional breweries appearing regularly. It sits almost opposite Dig Inn, making the final two Marple stops very easy to combine.

5A. Hop Haus, Romiley
Hop Haus, formerly Jake’s Ale House, is a double-fronted micropub close to Romiley station. The bright main room has the bar towards the rear, with a smaller room beyond and seating outside at the front. Five changing cask ales are normally available alongside craft keg and boxed cider, with local breweries strongly represented. The station is only a couple of minutes away.

5B. The Crafty Vendor, Romiley
The Crafty Vendor is a modern bar and bottle shop just across from Hop Haus. Inside, the light room mixes contemporary seating with shelves of bottles and spirits, while the old bank vault remains as a distinctive feature towards the rear. Eight craft keg beers are normally available alongside cocktails, wine and packaged beer. Romiley station is only a short walk away.

6. The Steel Works, Bredbury
The Steel Works opened in 2024 in a former pharmacy and takes its name from Bredbury’s industrial past. Inside, the spacious micropub uses steelworks-themed details and historic information, with a large beer garden at the rear. Four changing cask ales are normally available alongside keg beer and cider. Bredbury station is around a short walk away, making this a neat final stop at the Greater Manchester end of the trail.

Getting back
Finishing at Bredbury: Bredbury station is a short walk from The Steel Works, with trains back towards Romiley, Marple and Manchester.
Finishing at Disley: Disley station is only a few minutes from Malt Disley, with trains towards New Mills and Manchester or south towards Buxton.
Check current train times before travelling, particularly in the evening.
