BUY ME A PINT

A day out by train (and bus) from Northallerton along the Cleveland Coast to Marske on the Sea and Saltburn before heading back to Middlesbrough (with a drop into Redcar in the morning). Includes visits to various Micropubs along the way in Marske, Saltburn and Middlesbrough and a trip to Play Brew Co in Middlesbrough.

Transpennine Express from Northallerton to Redcar Central after breakfast. These only ran as far as Middlesbrough last time I was up this way.

Redcar

Change of train here but was far too early to visit the 2 Micropubs here. Ive visited both previously are are both less than a 5 minute walk away from the station. “The Gypsy Rover” and “Ritas Pantry”. Some great views from The Beacon on the front aswell (lift to 7th floor)

Marske-by-the-Sea

Train from Redcar Central to Marske. Never visited here before. Only a short stroll into the small town centre.

Clarendon

On the main High Street, nice old fashioned pub called Claredon (also known as Middle Bar). Very spacious inside with a very traditional decor. 3 Cask Ales to choose from here (Theakston – Old Peculiar, Black Sheep – Best Bitter and Camerons – Strong Arm). Opted for Camerons – Strong Arm, a very well kept beer!

Lockdown Micro Bar

Situated next door was the Lockdown Micro Bar, only one cask ale on here from Ferry Ales Brewery in Lincoln. Very modern layout with some draft products and cocktails.

The Wynd – Craft Beers

Excellent Bottle Shop and Craft beer shop situated around the main shops in the town. 10 Keg Lines and a great selection of both local and national cans and bottles. Comfy and simplistic seating layout and a friendly owner who was great to have a chat with (aswell as a few customers including 2 who were from Halifax). Hadn’t tried this years Vault City – Cloudy Lemonade so went with this and wasn’t disappointed.

The Smugglers Den

A quick walk around the corner to The Smugglers Den, an excellent nautical themed bar which ran throughout the bar. Sat in the back room with a lovely roaring fire. 2 beers on from Three Brothers and one from Camerons. Went with the Thaipa from Three Brothers!

Saltburn

Arriva X3 from Marske to Saltburn, a quick 10 minute journey up to the Station Square

The Pillar Box

Micropub a few minutes walk from the train station. Themed for the Royal Mail, covered in Post Office memorabilia, cushions all show post boxes and on the walls. Interestingly theres a Queen Victoria post box outside the bar itself still in use (hardly any of these around). Just the one beer on here from Settle Brewery, a lovely Marmalade Bitter!

The Guns Bar

Just up the road from the Pillar Box is The Guns Bar. 4 handpulls here but none with anything on so went with Kirkstall Brewery – Spokane on Keg.

The Marine

Heading to the front from The Guns Bar is the Marine. A large old style pub located on the seafront. Good choice of beers on here from Three Brothers and Camerons. Went with the Northern IPA from Three Brothers.

Signals

Located in the station redevelopment, this is a cafe during the day and an upstairs bar several evenings a week (luckily you can order beers that they have on, and sit upstairs when the bar isnt open). They had their own IPA – Station IPA available on Keg.

Middlesbrough

On the train again, this time from Saltburn to Middlesbrough

Play Brew Co

15 minute walk located in an industrial estate is Play Brew Co. Really nicely done out unit which houses a bar and brewery. 12 taps and an extensive range of cans to take away.

The Bottled Note

Located on Borough Road, The Bottled Note had 3 Cask ales on and a great selection of keg beers, spirits etc. Decided on Finisher from Black Sheep Brewery.

Devils Advocate

Just up the road, but very busy as they were showing the Middlesbrough match. One cask ale on here, Shindigger from Durham Brewery.

The Twisted Lip

Last call in Middlesbrough before heading back for my train time. Really good bar this one, lots of items fitting in with its character. Great to see a few friends with a guitar playing and singing along in a side room. Three beers on from Yorkshire Heart, Roosters and Daleside. Opted with the Roosters YPA. Finished here and headed back to the Railway Station for my journey home.
