BUY ME A PINT

After a morning at Summerlee Museum of Scottish Life I headed back into Glasgow to head to Glasgow.

The Pot Still

A great traditional bar near to Glasgow Queen Street station and known as one of Scotlands best Whisky Pubs (with over 750 to choose from)

Choice of 4 Kelburn Brewery beers on here, Ive had several from this brewery before and have always been impressed. Jaguar was the choice this time, a 4.5% Pale Ale.

A quick walk up to Glasgow Queen Street (Low Level) next to catch the train up to Bellgrove to head for the Tennent’s Brewery Tour.

Tennent’s Brewery Tour

A quick 10 minutes walk from Bellgrove Station brings me to Tennent’s Wellpark Brewery.

A very informative tour from Tony which included all the history of the Brewery which has existed since 1556 (with lager being brewer since 1885). The tour includes how they first started brewing lager to how they first got into exporting beers to different can designs (with the Tennent’s Girls) and advertising plus lots more.

One interesting fact is that Tennent’s Lager is the Number One selling drink in Scotland. Tennent’s is one fifth bigger than all Coca-Cola variants combined, 20 per cent bigger than Smirnoff and Irn Bru combined and almost five times bigger than the next beer brand.

Upstairs next to learn about the brewing process from start to finish (shown on Diagram below) and some insight into their kegging, canning and tank process.

Upstairs next for the tasting session in the bar. The first pint was the “Tennent’s – Unpasteurised Lager“ served straight from a tank. Basically Tennent’s Lager but fresher!

And onto the 3 bottled beers (Export Lager – 9%, Export Scotch Heavy – 9% and Tennent’s Light – 3.5%). All very tasty and different in their own way. Overall a very good tour and one id highly recommended if you’ve a few hours spare in Glasgow.

Some great artwork surrounding the brewery on walls and along the street, including a Tennent’s “T” made out of kegs.

Drygate Brewery

Just around the corner from Tennent’s is Drygate Brewery. The name Drygate comes from a church on a Sunday in Glasgow when people had to confirm they were sober when they passed through it (hence Drygate).

A good range of their own beers, along with guests and an extensive Can listing. Started off with a can of one of their own beers “Tone Burst” a Rhubarb Sour, followed by Soren Craft – Pompelcello DDH.

Redmonds Bar

Into Redmonds Bar next, not far from Bellgrove Station. 3 guest kegs on here along with a number of scottish lagers.

Decided on Pollys Brew – White Noise, a delicious pale ale brewed in Wales.

WEST Brewery and Bar

15 minutes walk now onto WEST Brewery and Bar.l. This German style brewery serving beer made in its Glasgow Green microbrewery to customers in the adjoining beer hall, West on the Green. The company West Brewing Company went into administration but was bought back by Wetzel in 2008.

A good variety of beers available here (all Keg), 10 in Total. Decided on the German Pale Ale and G40, both turned out to be good choices!

The Laurieston

Back to a very traditional old style bar next “The Laurieston” with authentic 1960s decor (and also listed on CAMRAs National Historic Pub Interiors)

Choice of 2 cask ales on here from Fyne Ales. Went with “Jarl”. A beer I’ve had several times and always enjoyed.

Koelschip Yard

Last call of the night to “Koelschip Yard”, a great little bar serving a brilliant selection of keg beers (and one Cask beer available this evening)

A couple of sours on the menu here from Otherworld Brewing and Drop Project, both excellent. Had a really good chat with Ewan, one of the bars regulars aswell. Really good choice to head out here!

A quick walk over to Queens Street station now for the train back to Glasgow Central.

Your Tennant’s visit brings back memories!
Long time ago I was a tanker driver in London & we regularly supplied breweries with methanol for cleaning purposes.
Made Glasgow late afternoon for the delivery.
Never did get round to doing the tour!
I’m also old enough to remember the Sweetheart Stout ladies!
