13/08/22 – Great Yarmouth and Norwich

First stop of the day was Great Yarmouth. Used to go on family holidays here years ago and doesnt look to have changed much. Got the X1 bus from Norwich Bus Station (fast service through to Great Yarmouth)

Tombstone Salon Bar

This bar is run by “Tombstone Brewery” which operates at the rear of the premises. Only ever had one beer from this brewery (at Nottingham Beer Festival).

All beers here are served on gravity behind the bar and an excellent choice of beers from their own on site brewery along with other guests.

Started off with “Amarillo” from Tombstone Brewery, followed by “Yorkshire Golden” from C84 Brewery and lastly “Voyager” from Britt Brewery.

Back on the bus from here for an afternoon around Norwich.

The Plasterers Arms

First call in Norwich was to The Plasterers Arms. A great hidden gem of a pub, with a great choice of cask and keg beers.

Started with “Kingslayer” from Humber Douchy Brewing Co in Bacton, Suffolk followed by a keg sour “Summer Crusher” from Holy Goat Brewing in Scotland.

If youre visiting here also check the food offering. Homemade Pizza and Fries at very reasonable prices and really good portions! Would definitely recommend!

The Leopard

A quick 10 minute walk around the corner brings me to “The Leopard”. Yet another great pub, nicely done out inside (and great air conditioning- just what was needed with the warm weather).

A good selection of cask ales on here to choose from, a lot being local breweries. The “Hibiscus Blonde” stood out, a sweet blonde ale infused with hibiscus petals giving it a tart berry flavour. The brewery is based in Bury St Edmunds.

The Malt & Mardle

A steady walk uphill to Norwich’s Micropub. “The Malt & Mardle”. This was converted from retail use in 2021. Interestingly the word “Mardle” is a Norfolk word for a relaxed conversation.

A good choice of 2 Cask Ales, 4 Keg Beers and. 4 Ciders to choose from here. All set in a small room with a couple of tables outside at the front.

Went with a keg beer from The Queer Brewing Project based in London. “Something to put in you”, a delicious Hazy Pale Ale!

Artichoke

Over the road from The Malt & Mardle is Artichoke. A very nice looking 1930s building with large outside and inside areas.

A large choice of cask and keg beers again here. Went with a beer from a brewery from Nottingham – Neon Raptor. “Upside Backwards”, a refreshing Cherry and Blackberry Fruit Sour.

The Brewery Tap

Last call for the afternoon (a couple more to visit in the evening) was “The Brewery Tap”. A pub with a huge choice of beers (cask and keg) along with ciders.

Incidentally they had a “Sour Fest” on, with a large range of sour beers both cask and keg (very rare to see cask sours), so I was spoilt for choice here. Ive included a number of photos below of the beer boards, Fat Cat Brewery beers, Cask Sours and more.

Kings Head

Onto an award winning pub, both branch and Norfolk Pub of the Year 2022. The pub has 2 separate bars (one at the front and one at the back).

A great selection of cask ales on here from various different breweries. Noticed a Mild on the bar from Shortts Farm Brewery in Thorndon, Suffolk. “Two Tone”, was a very enjoyable beer and a style you dont see too often.

Ribs of Beef

Last call of the evening to “Ribs of Beef”, a bar I visited several years ago when I was last in Norwich. Great location by the riverside (with seating on 2 levels).

A brilliant choice of cask and keg beers again in here. 9 cask beers and 4 keg beers to choose from.

Another sour beer for me in here. “Mango & Passionfruit Papaya Martini Sour”, a delicious sour packed full of flavour from Play Brew Co in Middlesbrough (visited here on one of my previous blog posts). A great location downstairs on a balcony over the river.
