This blog features a couple of Micropubs in the centre of Newcastle “The Split Chimp”, “Delta Lounge” and “The Wobbly Duck” along with a visit to Jesmond to visit “Carriage”, originally Jesmond Station.

Carriage

A short walk from Jesmond Tyne and Wear Metro station brings me to “Carriage”. A pub converted from the former Jesmond Metro Station. A pub which shows its history, being packed full of railway memorabilia along with the original ticket office window.

A great choice of five real ales here, alongside a real cider and several keg beer options. Started off with “Alnwick Gold” from Alnwick Brewing Co based in Alnwick. A delicious blonde ale, with an added hint of honey to finish the beer off. Followed this with “Sandpiper” from Cullercoats Brewery based in North Shields. A great beer having won awards in the past, packed full with 4 different hops.

The Wobbly Duck

Located on Eldon Square in the city centre is a small micropub called “The Wobbly Duck”. It opened in July 2021 and is downstairs from the main street which is a row of Georgian terraced houses.

A great little pub with some regular locals in and a friendly host. Really nice atmosphere and some great beer knowledge. A selection of five real ales alongside 10 keg craft beers. Started off with “Woof” from Willibald Farm Brewery based in Ontario, Canada, a tasty dry hopped IPA. Followed with a Vault City sour “Dark Fruits Cookie Dough Dreamcake”. The name says it all for this one at 8.5% ABV.

Delta Lounge

Located in the railway arches a short walk from Newcastle Railway Station is “Delta Lounge”, a conversion of the former Box Social and Split Chimp Micropubs (Split Chimp has moved – see below). This is classed as the taproom for Alpha Delta Brewery which started in September 2019.

A great selection of twelve keg craft beers available with a big can selection. Lots of different styles and strengths. Started off with “Lally Wants a Cracker” from The Wild Beer Co in Somerset. A fantastic Barrel Aged Fruit Sour aged in Tequila and Port Barrels for 4 years. Then went onto one of their own beers “Nikos”, a Vanilla Cola Sour. Really enjoyed this and sat outside in the sun.

The Split Chimp

Just around the corner from Delta Lounge is “The Split Chimp”. A micropub which originally opened in May 2016 but relocated in May 2017 to larger premises.

On the bar today were two real ales, two real ciders and seven keg craft beers along the back wall. Went with a favourite of mine from local Wylam Brewery “Hickey the Rake”, a mouthwatering Pale Ale packed full of lemon, lime and pineapple.
