BUY ME A PINT

A day out over the Kings Coronation Bank Holiday weekend to Ilkley. The first half of the day was spent at Crafty Dogg’s Beer Festival held at King’s Hall, followed by a few independent pubs around Ilkley one of which having its own brewery on site, and a call into Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Crafty Dogg’s Beer Festival

The first half of the day was spent at “Crafty Dogg’s Beer Festival”, held at King’s Hall and Winter Gardens located just over the road from the Railway Station. This is the second year this has been held and allows lots of independent craft breweries from around the country to come together in one place.

There were 13 breweries this year, some being local and some from further afield, spread over 2 rooms in the venue, A number of these id not tried a beer from before. The breweries were: (ive included links so you can check them out).

Bini Brew Co – Ilkley, West Yorkshire
State of Kind Brew Co – Wigan, Lancashire
Overtone Brewing Co – Glasgow, Scotland
ATOM Beers – Hull, East Yorkshire
Bayonet Brewing – Northallerton, North Yorkshire
Beer Ink – Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
XYLO – Margate, Kent
Powder Monkey Brewing Co – Gosport, Hampshire
Wishbone Brewery – Keighley, West Yorkshire
Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing – London
Merakai Brewing Co – Uckfield, East Sussex
Tartarus Beers – Leeds, West Yorkshire
Heist Brew Co – Sheffield, South Yorkshire
New Bristol Brewery – Bristol
Loud Shirt Brewing Co – Brighton, East Sussex

The photos below are of some of the bars and the venue including some of the beer selections. My beers tried in order were:
– Uberliner Weisse (Bini Brew Co)
– Shetland Pony Pale Ale (Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing)
– How Berry Refreshing (Merakai Brewing Co)
– Detect and Strike (Bayonet Brewing)
– He Could Dance to a Dripping Tap That Lad (State of Kind Brew Co)
– Capital Tropical (Overtone Brewing Co)
– Mango & Lime Lassi Gose (New Bristol Brewery)
– Embrace (Powder Monkey Brewing)
– Sabro (XYLO Brewing)
– Blueberry and Strawberry Fruit Collider (Beer Ink)

Flying Duck

The first pub call in Ilkley was to the “Flying Duck”. The building dates back to the early 1600’s and the current building was originally constructed as a farmhouse built in 1709 and is known to be Ilkley’s oldest public house. The pub incorporates “Wharfedale Brewery” in a converted barn at the rear of the pub and was started up in 2012.

A great line up of 9 cask beers (6 of which were from the in house brewery), alongside a large craft keg line up. I decided to go with “Coronation Pale Ale”, an easy drinking pale ale at 4% ABV.

Bar T’at

Onto a Market Town Taverns pub next called “Bar T’at”, this opened in 1999 and was converted from a China Shop. A really popular and busy bar with ample outside seating at the rear of the pub.

Another great selection of beers on here. 8 Cask Beers and 9 Craft Keg beers to choose from, and lots of different styles. I went with “Mosaic” from Liverpool based Neptune Brewery. A easy drinking pale ale using Mosaic Hops.

Friends of Ham

A walk back towards the Railway Station brings me to “Friends of Ham”, a really relaxed specialist beer, wine, charcuterie and cheese bar. Sister pub to the one in Leeds not far from the Railway Station. Really popular place again with both inside and outside seating (at the front).

Lots of choice yet again here with 3 cask lines and 12 keg lines to choose from. Noticed “Virtuous” from Kirkstall Brewery on Tap 2 so went with this. A really tasty and juicy session IPA.

Fuggle & Golding

Last call in Ilkley is to “Fuggle & Golding”, a craft beer bar and bottle shop which opened in 2015. A great play on words with Fuggle and Golding both being English grown hops. A really busy place when I walked in, nice to see.

A selection of 10 keg lines (a number being from Heist Brewery in Sheffield after a tap takeover), alongside an extensive can and bottle selection to drink in or takeaway (or Growler fills from Keg Lines). “Rearea” from Tartarus Beers in Leeds was my choice, a fresh tasting Strawberry, Lime and Coconut sour beer.

The Burley Tap

Last call of the day, jumping off the train at Burley-in-Wharfedale (and a 7/8 minute walk) to “The Burley Tap”. This opened in 2018 and is located on the corner of the main junction in town. Really popular place being really busy inside and outside, with a live singer on outside.

A single cask ale available here (alongside a large selection of Saltaire Brewery Bottles). “Saltaire Blonde” was the cask ale available, a really good beer from nearby Saltaire Brewery.
