A Sunday afternoon drive out to visit the newly opened pub on Moorthorpe Railway Station “The Mallard” owned and run by Jolly Boys Brewery.

The Mallard

A drive out to Moorthorpe Railway Station where a new pub opened on Saturday 13th May called “The Mallard”. This is located in the station buildings, the former use of which was a cafe on the station. It is owned by “Jolly Boys Brewery” who are based in Barnsley. A brewery which was setup in November 2014 after an idea between friends in a snug in Scarborough.

Jolly Boys Brewery owns another pub in Barnsley Town Centre “Jolly Tap on the Arcade” and used to run “The Jolly Tap” in Wakefield Town Centre but this has since shut. As you enter the pub (from the car park as restrictions dont allow them to have access from the platform), some photos show the original refurbishment of the station buildings to what they are today.

Currently there are 3 rooms – one with the bar in, one to the side and one to the front (which has large windows overlooking the platform). Plans are to open up another room to the side (formerly a conference room) and allow some outside seating for the sunny days.

Lots of choice on the bar starting with 4 cask ales from Jolly Boys Brewery, 2 Real Ciders from Lilleys aswell as a couple of ABK Beers and several draught ciders and lagers including SALT-Jute, Aspall Cider, Fruli and Pravha, so lots of choice for everyone.

I started off with the “Supa-Citra Pale Ale” before moving onto “Jolly Yorkshire Bitter”. Both very easy drinking beers and kept very well.
