BUY ME A PINT

Day one down in Hampshire after half a days journey south from West Yorkshire. 4 Micropubs visited in the afternoon/evening starting with “West Street Alehouse” in Fareham, “6 Barrels” in Totton, “The Hourglass Micropub” in New Milton and “Saxon Bar” in Christchurch. Finishing off the day with “London Road Brewhouse” in Southampton.

West Street Ale House

First visit of the day was to the “West Stteet Ale House” in Fareham. Located on the railway line between Southampton Central and Portsmouth, the Micropub being a 7 minute walk from the station into town.

This micropub opened in June 2019 so is celebrating its 4th anniversary this year (although with a few adaptations through COVID). A really warm welcome here from Steve and Sam!

A fantastic range of beers to choose from in here. 3 cask ales (being from Goodards, Exmoor and Arundel) alongside 7 keg beers.

I started with “Ringo” from New Bristol Brewery, a deliciously hoppy and hazy IPA, and followed by “Little Arms Big Ambitions” from Portsmouth based Staggeringly Good Brewery. Another great tasting beer.

The Micropub also runs as a bottle shop/takeaway with lots of different cans and bottles in varying styles to choose from.

6 Barrels

Back onto the train, changing at Southampton Central and getting off at Totton. A short 10 minute walk through Totton Town Centre brings me to “6 Barrels”. A small Micropub and craft bar at the edge of the town centre.

Four handpumps on the bat with two being in use today (Monday). Both being local breweries, “Steam Town” in Eastleigh which im visiting on Friday and “Bat Country Brew Co” in Romsey.

I started with “Rodeo Joe” from Bat Country then moved onto one of their keg beers “Open Face” dfrom a choice of 5 rotating keg beers. A good selection of still cider is also available with a board showing all the flavours.

The Hourglass Micropub

A couple of stops up on the train brings me to New Milton, on the edge of the New Forest. Less than a minutes walk away from the train station is “The Hourglass Micropub” which opened in December 2017.

Cask ales here served from gravity, with a choice of 2 cask beers and 8 keg beers. I started with “Did you have to pack both snooker cues” from Pretty Decent Beer Co in London (a new brewery for me), a tasty hoppy pale ale.

I moved onto “Spratwaffler” from Time & Tide based in Deal. A really light and hoppy session pale ale.

Saxon Bar

A 10 minute train journey (and a 9 minute walk) brings me to Christchurch on the outskirts of Bournemouth. A Micorpub that I last visited in 2016.

A warm welcome from Mark this evening in the Saxon Bar. Table service in here and seating and tables around the one roomed Micropub uses wood reclaimed from Bournemouth Pier.

Some great beers to choose from in here. 4 cask beers and 8 keg beers. I started with “Kirrin Island” from Hattie Brown’s Brewery based in Swanage (a new brewery for me). A delicious tropical pale, before moving onto “Corbel” from Eight Arch Brewery in Wimborne. A tasty traditional IPA.

Finished with a sour beer from Hammerton Brewery “Malus Fruit”, a tart and refreshing blackberry and apple sour.

London Road Brew House

My last call of the day was in Southampton to the “London Road Brew House”, a busy bar which houses its own micro brewery.

6 beers from the brewery on keg. I went with the 2 sour beers. “Go, Man, Go!”, a mango and pineapple sour, followed by “Peach Sour”.
