BUY ME A PINT

A day out to Rotherham, a town named after the River Rother which is one of the two rivers to run through the town (The River Don being the second). The town has become well known for its Steel making industry. Today I visited several micropubs dotted around the outskirts of the town, alongside Chantry Brewery’s Taproom, and finishing with 2 pubs in the town centre.

A Rotherham Connect bus ticket covered all the bus journeys on this trip which cost £5.80 and can be used on multiple bus companies. I used First and Stagecoach today.

Stop Inn Time

The first bar of the day was in Brinsworth, a short journey from Rotherham Interchange on the 73 bus towards Sheffield. This Micro Bar opened in March 2019 in a former hardware shop.

A really nicely done out Micro Bar with ample seating inside and a very modern look and feel to the place. A fantastic outside area aswell with undercover and smoking seating areas. The floor being fake grass. One outside area named “Moment in Time”.

A choice of 2 cask ales here both from local Barnsley based “Acorn Brewery”. I went with “Sweet Dreams”, a tasty and fruity amber ale, brewed to celebrate music of the 80s.

The bus stop is located a few doors down from this bar. Bus 208 to head to the next 2 venues.

Dragon’s Tap

These next two pubs are in the Brecks area of Rotherham. “Dragon’s Tap” opened in April 2018 and was Rotherham districts second Micropub. It used to be a DIY shop, located in a small row of shops.

A large one room pub with the bar in the back right hand corner. A few tables and chairs outside at the front of the pub aswell.

A great range of six cask ales available in here, some local and some from further afield. I went with “Amarus Bitter” from Attic Brew Co based in Birmingham. A really easy drinking bitter.

Roadhouse Bar & Bottles

A very quick walk to this next one, just over the other side of the roundabout. This micropub and bottleshop opened in May 2021 utilising a former supermarket store room. A really quirky bar with seating in lots of different corners and outside (with a great mix of different chairs)

A selection of 10 keg and 2 cask beers, as well as a huge selection of cans and bottles to drink in or takeaway. I went with “Micro Pale Ale” from Middlesbrough based Play Brew Co. A really easy drinking session pale.

Heading up to Rawmarsh for the next Micropub. So X1/X10 into Rotherham Interchange and change onto the 8/9 out to Rawmarsh.

Something BREW INN

Onto Rotherham Districts third Micropub called “Something BREW INN” which opened in May 2018 in a former office building. A one roomed pub set back slightly from the street at a raised level. Outdoor seating at the front and a large rear garden (wet weather today meant chairs were not out)

Two real ales on the bar today, both from local breweries – Stancill and Bradfield. I went with “Blonde” from Stancill Brewery, an easy drinking light blonde ale.

The next call was in Thybergh so 8/9 followed by changing on X78 (Sheffield to Doncaster) bus.

Deer Park Tap

A conversion from a former barn on the Deer Park Farm retail park. The site containe a farm shop and a tearooms already. It originally closed in December 2021 but reopened in July 2022.

Some really good restoration work here to bring the old barn back to life and on two levels.

A great choice of 3 real ales on the bar, all from local breweries (Little Critters, Thornbridge and Welbeck Abbey). I went with “Nightingale”, a stronger pale using UK grown hops.

Back towards the Parkgate area of Rotherham next so the X78 back towards Rotherham and changing back onto the 8/9 to get out to Parkgate.

Little Haven Micro Bar

My first call in the Parkgate area is to the “Little Haven Micro Bar”, the 4th micropub in the Rotherham District which opened in June 2018 in a former hair and beauty salon (having being a Post Office some years ago). A two roomed pub with a friendly welcome. An outside area at the back of the bar aswell.

A choice of 3 real ales (the third was in the process of being changed). I went with “First Past the Post” from Chin Chin Brewery who are based in South Kirkby. A really tasty and refreshing beer.

Chantry Brewery Tap

A short 10 minute walk back towards Parkgate Retail Units brings me to “Chantry Brewery Tap”. The brewery started in November 2012 and the tap opened in late June 2022. A 2 levelled taproom with music stage and seating downstairs, alongside seating on the top level. A great warm welcome from Steve in here.

A large bar is located on the top level, where a large selection of both cask and keg beers are served, mostly from the on site brewery with the odd guest. I went with “Punky Reggae”, an easy drinking pale ale at 4%.

The brewery itself is located in the connected unit next door to the tap room (a shop is open during the week here).

Lots of busses to choose from to take you back to Rotherham Interchange from here (about one every 10 minutes).

The Bridge Inn

My first call in the town centre was to “The Bridge Inn”. An “Old Mill Brewery” pub, with the brewery being in Snaith. The pub was originally built for the Mappin Brewery opposite in 1930 and used stone from the original Bridge Inn which dated back to the 1700s.

An interesting internal styled pub as it is decorated in a goth style. Mainly using black and red colours, and even having coffins as tables.

A choice of 3 real ales on the bar here (the 4th had run off), all from Old Mill Brewery. Bitter, Blonde and a Pale. I went with “Styrian Wolf”, a delicious tropical and fruity pale ale.

New York Tavern

My last pub is a 10 minute walk out of town, “New York Tavern”, a pub which was reopened by Chantry Brewery in September 2013, although had been a pub since 1856. The building was originally the home of John Guest of nearby “Guest & Chrimes Itonworks” and was reduced in size when the road behind opened.

A very traditional style pub with lots of choice, 7 cask ales, 2 real ciders and keg selections. I went with “Steelos” from Chantry Brewery. A slightly spicy session fruity ale. Really easy drinking.

Love these updates, takes the hard work out of planning trips. Would it be possible to add a Paw print to the pub report to indicate that it is dog friendly??

Great post! I live fairly local but wasn’t aware of the Deer Park Tap, but I shall certainly be giving it a try now. Keep up the good work.
