BUY ME A PINT

A trip over to Bristol to cover 11 breweries and a couple of really great beer pubs. Bristol is famous for its significance as a historical British Port. The city played a major role in the European discovery of and trade with North America, which included slaves and plantation goods. There are some great venues to visit and most except the last few are all within walking distance.

Small Bar

Housed in a Grade II listed building this “Small Bar” opened in 2013 and located on King Street, a street filled with lots of ale and craft bars with street seating. Asian inspired wings is the food offering at Small Bar aswell.

A huge selection of beers varying in styles are available, some being located and some from a lot further afield. I went with a sour beer which was a collaboration between two breweries, “Browar Stu Mostow” from Poland and “Finback” in the US. The beer “GEEK” was a delicious mango and peach smoothie sour.

King Street Brewhouse

A short walk to the other end of King Street brings me to “King Street Brewhouse” on the corner. This opened in March 2016 and brews both cask and keg beer on site. The brewery can be seen behind the bar.

A choice of 4 cask ales and 4 keg ales brewed on site today. I went with “Perpetual Hero” on cask, a tasty hazy American IPA. I also tried their most popular keg beer “White Trash” , an easy drinking American IPA.

Left Handed Giant – Brewpub

A short 8 minute walk back over the river brings me to the “Left Handed Giant – Brewpub”. A fantastic 3 floor brewpub which opened in June 2019 in part of the old Courage Brewery site. Mission Pizza also serve here and have a great selection to choose from.

Some great covered seating located on the riverside. The second floor seating has views over the top of the brewery setup on the site.

A huge selection of beers. Some of which are brewed on site behind the bar, the others are brewed at their main brewery site the other side of Bristol, which will be featured later on. I went with one of their sour beers “Endless Talking”, lively tart and refreshing.

Kings Head

Another short walk heading back in the direction of the railway station and into the “Kings Head”, a pub dating back to around 1660, and listed by CAMRA as a pub of national historic importance. The mid Victorian back bar is the second oldest known to CAMRA in the UK. The pub is now in the hands of local brewery “Good Chemistry Brewing”.

A choice of 3 cask beers (one from Good Chemistry and 2 Guests), alongside a choice of 7 keg beers. I went with “Cherry Fizz”, a fruity sour beer packed full of cherry flavour.

The Cornubia

A 1 minute walk to the next pub “The Cornubia”, hidden amongst large financial buildings this hidden gem of the pub was built in 1775. The current owners have added a large beer garden, making this a popular spot.

Sausage Rolls and Scotch Eggs and similar items are served on the bar, with a choice of chutneys to choose from to have with them. And a fantastic selection of pump clips covering the ceiling.

A selection of 6 cask ales from both local and further afield breweries. I went with “Spun Gold” from Twisted Oak Brewery based in Wrington, North Somerset.

Little Martha Brewing

Another short walk to the other side of of the river crossing the footbridge near Bristol Temple Meads Station, and onto “Little Martha Brewing”, located in a railway arch. Brewing on site (can see behind the bar).

A good selection of keg beers, with 4 brewed on site alongside 5 guest beers. I started with “Spacetime Foam”, a easy drinking sessionable table beer, and moved onto “Mysterious Intergalactic Object”, a New Zealand Pale Ale packed full of flavour (served from keg – I bought a can of it aswell)

If you’re around here during the day, drop into the “Pasty Emporium”, where you can grab a delicious hot pasty with numerous to choose from, and bring into the pub to eat.

Moor Beer

A 7 ish minute walk heading further out of time, this time to “Moor Beer”. A really well known brewery and one I visited a number of years back. Houses both the brewery (at the back) and the taproom to the front.

Lots of choice here again with the core range beers alongside specials. I went with “Resonance”, a very light and tasty Golden Ale. Got chatting to Rupert and Sue from Yeovil in here. The next few were by taxi so joined up for the next 3 pubs.

Wiper and True Brewery Tap

An Uber journey up to this one as it was a bit of a walk. “Wiper and True Brewery Tap” is a huge area both inside and outside. This opened a year ago in July 2022. A huge brewery setup is located at the back of the building, with the bar to the left. Streetfood vendors outside.

A big beer list here, mostly keg options but 2 cask beers on. Spotted a sour beer “Sunset Dreams”, a really delicious Rhubarb Sour Beer.

Basement Beers

Another Uber journey out to the top end of Bristol and into “Basement Beers”, a relatively nee brewery. In the same location as the closed Croft Brewery. A single roomed taproom with a really friendly atmosphere.

A choice of 5 beers from the brewery alongside a choice of their canned beers. Went with “Charlie Loves Mangoes”, a tasty 7% Mango Sour.

New Bristol Brewery

A short 6/7 minute walk to “New Bristol Brewerry”. A popular taproom serving a great range of their own beers with their standard beers, alongside special releases. The brewery itself is located at the back of the building and can be seen whilst enjoying a drink.

Some really good sounding beers here, including their newly released sour “Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Waffle Cone Sour”, the name says it all. Full of flavour.

Great food aswell here from Asado, one of the nicest burgers with Rosemary Salt Chips that Ive had. Well worth every penny.

Lost & Grounded Brewery

Another short Uber ride over to “Lost & Grounded Brewery”. A large building with the taproom towards the front and the huge brewery setup behind.

A choice of 12 keg beers, 10 of their own beers alongside 2 guest beers. “Wanna go to the Sun” was my choice, a tasty session pale ale with lots of flavour.

Another food vendor here which smelt delicious, this time being “Fat Dads Kitchen”

Left Handed Giant

Onto the main brewing site of “Left Handed Giant Brewery”. A huge industrial unit where the majority of brewing is carried out. A busy venue with a friendly feel about the place. Food vendor on site was “The Fish Truck”. Which smelt delicious.

A good selection of beers to choose from (and even more in cans). 10 keg lines. I went with another of their sours “Sunset Flip”, a collaboration between Left Handed Giant and Dugges in Sweden. A tasty Passionfruit, Orange and Carrot sour.

Tapestry by PROPS

My last call in Bristol was to “Tapestry by PROPS” brewery tap. Run by a Charity it is Bristol’s first disability focusses brewery. A really unique setup that you dont see around.

9 keg beers to choose from with 2 of them brewed in house. They are in the process of upgrading some of the kit aswell to increase brewing output. I went with “All Inn”, a tasty and hoppy pale ale. They have teamed up with local pizza “Berthas Pizzas” who deliver free to the tap room (and a free Garlic Bread with every order)
