BUY ME A PINT

Following on from being at the Nottingham Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival for a few hours in the morning, I headed out to Langley Mill and worked my way back into Nottingham via Eastwood, Giltbrook and Kimberley, calling at 9 Micropubs en route. All very welcoming and unique in their own way.

To start at Langley Mill either get the Nottingham-Leeds train from Nottingham Station, or the Rainbow 1, Trent Barton bus service from the centre which follows the whole route.

Railway Tavern

A short walk from Langley Mill Train Station, or from the bus stop brings me to my first call of the day “Railway Tavern”. A great small bar which opened in December 2019 when it was refurbished and reopened. New owners have recently taken over so are working to get it the way they want it. Really friendly welcome in here (and one of the best cellars ive seen).

A choice of 2 real ales on here, with the new owners hoping to get more in so good luck to them making a brilliant go of it. I went with “Harvest Pale” from nearby Castle Rock Brewery. Always a great beer this, tasty and easy drinking.

A short jump on the Rainbow 1 bus towards Nottingham getting off at Eastwood. The rest of the Micropubs were all walked between with the maximum walking distance being around 15 minutes at most.

Dog & Parrot

My next call is to the “Dog & Parrot”, a Micropub which was established in February 2017. Another friendly welcome in here and really well done out which looks great with the wooden décor throughout giving it a very rustic feel. Walls covered in memorabilia.

A great selection of 5 cask beers on today, from both local and further afield breweries. In todays case Nottingham, Wales and York. A great cider selection to accompany the beers aswell. I went with a Gavin and Stacey themed beer from VOG Brewery in Barry. “Oh! What’s Occurring”, an fruity tasty session ale.

Mellors Mews

A short walk down the road and on the opposite side of the road brings me to my next calling point “Mellors Mews”. A purpose built Micropub which first opened in August 2017, and after closing it reopened in September 2022 with new owners. The pub is named after Oliver Mellors, a fictional character in Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

A great line up of 4 cask ales, alongside some real cider. 2 local breweries (Castle Rock and Little Brewing) and 2 from further afield (Brew York and Thornbridge). I went with “TAJ” from Little Brewing Company . A sessionable IPA, really juicy and tasty.

The Gamekeeper’s

Another short walk up the road brings me to “The Gamekeeper’s”. This micropub opened in May 2017. You can also enter around the back aswell where there is a small beer garden and smoking area. Really busy pub and was great chatting with the owner and having a look in the cellar. If you manage to get in here and they have freshly made Scotch Eggs on the bar, dont miss out they are amazing!

A choice of 3 cask beers, alongside a couple of keg choices and some local ciders so lots of choice here. I went with “Endless Summer” from Nottingham based Black Iris Brewery. An American Hopped Session Pale Ale.

Tap & Growler

Around a 10 minute walk brings me to the next Micropub “Tap & Growler”, one I visited shortly after it opened in October 2015. This shop unit was formerly a charity shop. The name relating back to a container to takeaway beer in “Growler”. Really friendly pub, with a small outside seating area to the rear aswell which opened in August 2019.

5 cask beers on the bar today, with 6 keg lines and a greats selection of ciders. All the barrels can be seen in a unit directly next to the bar. Love this feature, it always adds to the atmosphere of being a real ale pub. I went with “Bass Face” from Little Eaton based Shiny Brewery. A tasty and tropical Hazy IPA.

Pick & Davy

Around the corner from Tap & Growler brings me to my next Micropub “Pick & Davy”. This Micropub opened in September 2018, dedicated to the areas mining industry, which shows with the name (“Pick” being a Mine Pick and “Davy” being a lamp used in the mines). Another warm welcome here from a popular busy pub. Outside seating at the front of the pub.

Inside, the back wall has being designed to look like a Coal Face and includes a Davy Lamp on the wall. Really cool feature. Lots of mining memorabilia around the pub.

A brilliant line up of 6 cask ales to choose from, both local and further afield. Went with “Oligo Nunk” from Nottingham based Hollow Stone Brewing Company. A beer named after a cave in America, and brewed with 4 hops. Really great beer!.

Caught & Bowled

A 15 minute walk from Pick & Davy brings me to the next calling point “Caught & Bowled”. A former newsagents and Giltbrooks first Micropub. Aswell as the name, the cricketing theme runs throughout the pub with the family having played for England, Nottinghamshire and Derby teams. Lots of cricket memorabilia on the walls throughout, and even the toilets have “Batsman” and “Batswoman” on them.

5 cask beers on the bar here, cider and a few keg choices, aswell as homemade cobs. Went with a beer from nearer home this time, “Heart & Soul” from Hebden Bridge based Vocation Brewery. A great fruity hoppy beer, really sessionable.

Miners Return

Another short 15 minutes walk (slightly uphill when you get halfway) into Kimberley, My next visit is to the “Miners Return”, a Micropub which opened in August 2016 on the site of the former Kimberley Miners Welfare Club. The Micropub was designed for locals to be a community pub, and one which promotes Cash Only. Lots of old Kimberley Memorabilia around the pub. Even Spit the dog has his own kennel built into the seating.

A selection of 4 cask beers on the bar here, I went with “Darling Buds” from The Warwickshire Beer Co based in Royal Leamington Spa. A light blonde ale and very refreshing. Was great chatting to the owners and customers at the bar in here, a real community feel to the pub.

Roots Emporium

Longest walk of the day, around 20 minutes and onto “Roots Emporium”, a quirky and interesting pub. This opened in December 2016 having being a furniture and gift shop beforehand. It was extended in late 2021 to include a former garage and back garden. The walls are covered with memorabilia, signs and ornaments. Even some from the former Kimberley Brewery. Seating at the front and a really interesting beer garden at the rear.

A great selection of 6 cask beers to choose from in here, some local and some from further afield, I went with a local beer from Nottingham based Black Iris Brewery. “Snake Eyes” is a great easy drinking pale ale, packed full of flavour.

The Rainbow 1 Trent Barton bus goes from a few minutes walk away back into Nottingham City Centre. A great line up of Micropubs and makes a great afternoon/evening out.
