A day out in Liverpool, heading up to the top of the Radio City tower, before heading to “Liverpool Brewing Co” Tap Room, “St Lukes Bombed Out Church”, a bar set in the grounds of a bombed out church, heading out to Cains Brewery Village, with lots of different bars, markets and eating spots, and finishing in Ormskirk with “Tap Room No 12”.

Liverpool

Started off with a touristy morning with a hop on hop off bus tour around the city with a commentary around the history of the city. These tickets are on offer 2 for 1 when travelling by train. CLICK HERE to get the voucher. Followed with a tour up the Radio City Tower, giving some spectacular views of the city and further afield.

Liverpool Brewing Co Taproom

A short couple of minutes walk from Liverpool Lime Street station brings me to my first call of the day, “Liverpool Brewing Co Taproom”. A small pub which is run by Liverpool Brewing Co. Really nice interior and very relaxing, a very warm welcome upon entering. Some nice seating at the front to watch the world go by aswell.

A good selection of beers, 5 cask ales which are from their own Liverpool Brewing Co, alongside a cider. A range of 8 keg beers alongside these. I went with “Time Out”, from Liverpool Brewing Co, a hazy session pale ale, really tasty.

St Luke’s – Bombed out Church

Next call is about a 7/8 minute walk down the road from the last pub. More of an unusual historical significance rather than one selling real ale. St Luke’s is a Grade II Listed Ruin which suffered catastrophic damage during the May Blitz in 1941. It was disused for many years before being transformed by a series of cultural events in the 2000’s which reopened the space to the public.

This is now a space used for films, dance , music and lots more and even holds the Liverpool Beer Festival in the centre. You can have a look around the inside for a £2 donation and is really worth it. A selection of images of this stunning venue can be found by CLICKING HERE. A garden bar is located in the grounds of the church serving a range of drinks, some on draught and others in bottles/cans. A really nice location to drop into and have a drink.

Cains Brewery Village

A 10/15 minute walk towards the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool brings me to “Cains Brewery Village”. The historic buildings from Cains Brewery have been restored and developed into a tourism, leisure and retail space which features lots of bars, pubs, food and shopping markets aswell as other traders.

The first call here was to “The Brewery Tap”. This building was part of the original Cains/Higsons Brewery. The stone work on the red brick building shows its original name “Grapes Inn”. A really nice interior with lots of memorabilia from Cains Brewery around the bar and seating areas.

2 cask ales on the bar here from nearby Black Lodge Brewery a few streets away. I went with “Days of the Echo Bloom”, a tasty Australian Pale Ale at 4.6%. Nice seating outside at the front in the sun.

While here also visited “Cains Brewery Bar”, set over 3 levels with a micro brewery kit behind the bar. This part of the Higsons brewery used to be the offices, tasting rooms and in the basement, the water supply. Lots of breweriana on display. Went onto “Red Brick Vintage” a massive indoor market with lots of stalls to choose from.

“The Yellow Submarine” is a Liverpool/Beatles themed bar with the Submarine being an old Boat. “The Tank Room”, a really well designed bar with indoor and outdoor seating, and finished at “Baltic Market Food Market”, a huge events space with a central bar and food venues around the outside. Lots of choice here. Had “Carmen” from Liverpool based Carnival Brewing Company here, a tasty and easy drinking pale ale.

Tap Room No 12

Back on the train from Liverpool Central and out to the opposite end of the line to Ormskirk. A short 5 minute walk from here brings me to my last call of the day “Tap Room No 12”. A former shop unit that has been converted into a single room micropub. Really popular and busy in here but a warm welcome on entering the pub. Seating outside to the front of the pub aswell.

A great range of beers and ciders on the bar. 3 Cask Ales, 10 keg lines and a cider on handpull. Aswell as a large bottle and can selection to choose from. Having just recently won the area CAMRA Pub of the Year for 5 years running. I went with “Ronnie Wood” from Liverpool based Top Rope Brewing. A tasty and sour packed full of Blackcurrants and Grapes.
