Today takes me to Ramsgate, the only Royal Harbour in the United Kingdom. Because of its proximity to mainland Europe, Ramsgate was a chief embarkation point both during the Napoleonic Wars and for the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Visited 4 Micropubs here, 2 in the centre and 2 slightly out of Ramsgate. Started with “The Hovelling Boat Inn” and “The Pub”, before visiting “Alehouse in the Middle of our Street” and “Conquerers Alehouse”.

The Hovelling Boat Inn

My first call in Ramsgate is to “The Hovelling Boat Inn”. This opened in March 2013 using the name of the original pub which had been closed for 104 years, having a number of different guises since. A great small Micropub with ample seating and a short walk from the front. A lovely warm welcome from Lisa along with some of the regulars. Really enjoyed the Chicken Tikka with chips.

A choice of 6 beers on the bar today to choose from alongside a number of ciders and bottled drinks. I started with “Spring Tide” from Manston based Shivering Sands Brewery. An Ultra Pale Ale using 3 hops, very tasty. I went onto “Dr Sunshine’s Special Friendly” from Broadstairs based Gadds Brewery. A very light and tasty wheat beer.

The Pub – Ramsgate

A walk back in the direction of the Railway Station brings me to “The Pub – Ramsgate”. This Micropub opened in 2020. A fantastic one roomed Micropub with seating outside at the front. Superb high ceilings and original brick walls make this Micropub look so good. A really warm welcome from owner Nicola, along with Ken who works behind the bar. Glad to see they are doing well and making a few changes to increase the amount of seating in the pub.

3 cask beers to choose from here alongside a large number of ciders and a number of keg beers including Bavarian beers. Wine produced between Nicola and a local vineyard is also sold. I started with “Session Best” from East Sussex based Cellar Head Brewing Company (who have just announced they are closing). A tasty English Bitter. I went onto “Fallout” from West Hythe based Hop Fuzz Brewery. A easy drinking session pale ale.

Ale House in the Middle of our Street

A short journey from Ramsgate Railway Station on the LOOP Bus takes me to my next call which is “Ale House in the Middle of our Street”. This originally opened as NauticAles in April 2016 and closed in July 2022. It reopened with its current name with new owners in June 2023. A lovely homely, warm and welcoming Micropub, along with a small backyard area. A warm welcome in here from Peter, and shortly after owner Emily.

A choice of 3 cask beers, alongside a large selection of ciders, keg beers and bottles/cans. I went with a couple of beers from Tonbridge Brewery (alongside a photo in their t-shirt taken for them). Started with “Old Chesnut”, a delicious chestnut coloured Bitter. I went onto “Blonde Ambition”, a tasty and sessionable blonde ale.

The Conqueror Alehouse

Another short ride on the LOOP bus, back past the Railway Station brings me to my last call in Ramsgate which is to “The Conqueror Alehouse”. A nice corner Micropub which opened in November 2010, the fourth Micropub in the UK. It is named after a handsome two-funnelled paddle steamer which operated excursions from Ramsgate to France around the beginning of the twentieth century, a photo of which is shown inside the pub. It has been renovated by the new owners with seating around the outside of the room. A lovely warm welcome from Hayden and Theresa today.

A great selection of 4 cask ales and 4 ciders available today. Beers all from local breweries. I went with a beer from West Malling based Kent Brewery. “Ekuanot” is a delicious fruity beer using US Hops. Really tasty beer.
