A visit to Minster, Ashford and Charing. Started off at Minster with a visit to “Hair of the Dog” Micropub in the town. Ashford I visit “Curious Brewing” located a short walk from Ashford International Station, before finishing in nearby Charing at “The Bookmakers Arms”.

Hair of the Dog

My first call is in Minster, a short walk from the Railway Station into the town brings me to “Hair of the Dog”. This Micropub opened at the end of 2013 in a former haidressers shop which had been in place since the second world war, hence the name of the Micropub. A great one roomed Micropub, very homely and welcoming. A great welcome from Julie in here along with a chat with a few of the regulars.

A choice of 3 beers on from Wantsum Brewery based in St-Nicholas-at-Wade in Kent, alongside a number of ciders as well as bottled beers. I started with “Dynamo”, named to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Dunkirk evacuation from Kentish shores. A delicious crisp golden ale. I moved onto “Hurricane”, a refreshing IPA and finished with “Imperium”, a delicious English bitter.

Curious Brewing

A short walk from Ashford International Railway Station brings me to “Curious Brewing”. A multi-million-pound investment by parent company Chapel Down which opened in May 2019. The Brewery located downstairs (which can be seen from the bar), and a bar and restaurant located on the second floor. A huge space and an impressive building.

6 keg beers on the bar from both Curious Brewing and Wild Beer Co, as well as a number of others in bottles behind the bar. I went with “Curious Session IPA”, a triple hopped tasty and refreshing session IPA.

Bookmakers Arms

My third call is a short train journey out from Ashford International to Charing and a few minutes walk from the Railway Station to “Bookmakers Arms”. This Micropub opened in May 2017 in a former kitchen shop. The name comes from the local point to point race meetings at Charing Racecourse. A beautiful one roomed pub, really great setting on the corner and very popular with locals. A really warm welcome from owner Graham as well as a number of local customers.

4 beers on the bar today, 2 from Ashford based Curious Brewing and 2 from West Malling based Kent Brewery. I went with the two from Kent Brewery, starting with “Cobnut”, a delicious red ale, packed full of flavour, and moving onto “Session Pale”, a very light and hoppy session beer.
