A visit to Canterbury. Canterbury is famed for its splendid cathedral and atmospheric medieval streets. 4 visits here, starting with “FLOC Brewing”, moving onto “The Thomas Tallis Alehouse”, “Foundry Brewpub” and “Pegasus”.

Floc Brewing

A short walk to the edge of Canterbury brings me to my first call which is to “Floc Brewing Taproom”, this opened in February 2022 having being converted from a trampoline club. A great space housing both the brewery and the taproom. A delicious smelling pizza food offering was available. A really busy popular place.

A choice of 8 keg beers available from a wall behind the bar, along with a fridge full of cans to drink in or takeaway. I went with “Whisper”, a delicious American pale ale brewed with Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic hops. A very tasty beer.

The Thomas Tallis Alehouse

My next call is a short walk from the Cathedral and is into “The Thomas Tallis Alehouse”. This opened in March 2016 in a 15th century half-timbered building, part of the historic Hospital of St John and the building was formerly The White Swan. The name “Thomas Tallis” comes from the organist at the Dover Priory and later Canterbury Cathedral. He was born in 1505 and died in 1585 and was an English composer of Choral music. A lovely alehouse split into a few small rooms. A great warm welcome from Ryan and Dave.

A great line up of beers and ciders in here, being 2 cask beers, 12 key kegs and a wide selection of ciders and other drinks. I went with “Skylarking” from Tunbridge Wells based Pig & Porter brewery. A delicious refreshing session pale ale.

Foundry Brew Pub

A short walk brings me to my third venue which is to the “Foundry Brew Pub”. This is home to Canterbury Brewers and Distillers. The building was originally owned by Wiltshire & Co who used it as a store. They moved from a nearby building and relocated into this current venue. A warm welcome from Flo when I arrived and met John the owner, who showed me around the brewery and explained what they produce including ale, whisky, gin, vodka and rum. Such a great venue, very busy and popular

A massive 15 beers on the bar (cask and keg), all brewed on site and a huge variety of styles to choose from. I went with a tasting paddle sampling 5 different beers. Started with “Foundry Man’s Gold”, a delicious blonde ale. Went onto “Foundry Torpedo”, a English Bitter. “Purple Monster 3” next, a sour wheat beer with blackcurrants and cherry. Finished with “Canterbury Pale Ale” and “Calm NEIPA”. All great beers and very tasty.

Pegasus

My last call in Canterbury is a short walk from Canterbury West Railway Station which is to “Pegasus”. Previously the “Mouton Rouge”, the “Pegasus” opened in September 2018. A lovely one roomed pub with the bar to the right hand side at the rear and a very stylish décor. A warm welcome from Alice and May behind the bar during the quiz night which was proving to be popular. I think I would have only managed one question correct.

A line up of 12 keg beers and 2 ciders available on the bar this evening. I went with a sour beer from Glasgow based Overtone Brewery. “Boogie Nights” is a passionfruit, lime and vanilla sour. Really tart and exotic, tasting like a pornstar martini cocktail.
