BUY ME A PINT

A day out in Chesterfield, home to the “Crooked Spire”The lead tiles used to cover the spire’s timbers (Over 32 tonnes of lead tiles) created such a heavy weight that the timbers simply couldn’t bear the strain, and twisted alarmingly. Visited a number of Micropubs, Brewery Pubs and Independent pubs throughout the day.

Maggie May’s

After arriving into Chesterfield on the train and meeting up with Chris from Chesterfield CAMRA, I headed out of the centre on the bus towards Walton. My first call of the day was to “Maggie May’s”. This is a community based Micropub and coffee shop located in a small shopping area and is run by a local couple. A really warm welcome in here, and a really nice decorated one room inside. To the rear is a “secret garden” which looks amazing, and seating out at the front also.

A line up of 2 cask beers on the bar this morning, along with a couple of keg beers to choose from. Both breweries being local I went with the one from Bradfield Brewery. “Euro Ale”, a delicious light and refreshing blonde ale brewed for the Euro 2024 football competition.

Real Ale Corner

A 15 minute walk brings me onto the Brampton Mile which I went on a few weeks ago. “Real Ale Corner” was my calling point here. A great small Micropub, being one of the earliest to open following “The Butchers Arms” in Kent, opening in 2009. A one roomed pub with bench seating around the sides and a very relaxed and community feel to the pub. One side is full of bottles and cans to drink in or takeaway, with some breweries showcased being from Northamptonshire (where the current owners are from). A great warm welcome from Dan and Laura today.

Celebrating the pubs 15th anniversary this weekend so an added outside bar alongside the inside bar. The outside bar having 6 cask and 3 keg beers, the inside 3 cask and 4 keg. Lots of great beers to choose from with some being more unusual. I started with “Remorseless” from Nottingham based Black Iris Brewery. A tasty blueberry, maple and vanilla sour beer. My second beer was “Surely It’s Coming Home This Time..!” from Derbyshire based Eyam Brewery. A delicious easy drinking session pale.

The Beer Parlour

My next call was in the Whittington Moor area of Chesterfield and located near to Chesterfield FC’s ground. “The Beer Parlour” is a fantastic pub which opened in September 2010. A one roomed pub with lots of seating and a very light airey feel to the place. A great warm welcome from Dean behind the bar this afternoon.

A great range of 8 cask beers on the bar to choose from, along with a number of keg options and a great choice of ciders. “Hair of the Dog” from North Yorkshire based Pennine Brewing Co in here for me. A delicious blonde ale, a very tasty and refreshing beer.

The Glassworks

A short walk down the road brings me to “The Glassworks”, the 3rd pub owned by local Brampton Brewery. It is located directly opposite the Chesterfield FC Stadium. A beautifully decorated pub with each room having different photos on the walls. A small beer garden to the rear of the pub also. A great warm welcome from manager Sam in here, was great chatting to you.

A line up today of 6 cask beers, 3 of which were from Brampton Brewery, alongside a number of keg options. First tried two beers from Brampton Brewery, “Tudor Rose”, a delicious and creamy pale ale. and moving onto “Golden Bud”, a light and hoppy golden ale. Finished with “Norfolk Topper” from Norfolk based Barsham Brewery. A great traditional bitter.

Chesterfield Alehouse

Next is back towards town to visit “Chesterfield Alehouse”. This first opened in 2013 in a former shop unit. A split level downstairs area with the bar being at the rear with seating at the front. Another seating area can be found upstairs. A brilliant welcome in here from owner Trevor.

A great line up of 8 keg beers, 5 cask beers and a selection of ciders, cans and bottles. Spotted a sour from Vault City Brewing which I had not had before so went with this. “Soctopod”, a 10% sour in collaboration with Manchester based Wander Beyond Brewing. A tasty imperial sour IPA conditioned on passion fruit and mango.

Brimming with Beer

My next call is in the Brimington area of Chesterfield and is to “Brimming with Beer”. This opened in June 2016. A great one roomed pub with a lovely seating area out at the front. Great traditional feel inside with wooden benches, tables and chairs. A really great warm welcome from owner Ben in here this afternoon.

A line up of 2 cask beers alongside a number of keg beers and lots of bottles/cans to drink in or takeaway. I went with “DDH Jaipur” from Bakewell based Thornbridge Brewery. This beer was brewed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Jaipur. The same recipe but this one is double dry hopped. A great beer, really tasty and some great tropical flavours coming through.

Speedwell Inn

Next call is out towards Staveley and is to “Speedwell Inn”, this is the home of “Townes Brewery” who have been brewing on the site since 1997. The old head brewer Alan retired in 2013 with Lawrie taking over and brewing since. A beautiful pub with a great open plan layout with a number of different seating areas. Great warm welcome from Lawrie and Jenny today behind the bar.

3 cask ales on the bar today so went with all 3 as they are all brewed by Townes Brewery. Started with “Staveley Cross”, a tasty red ale and full of flavour. Secondly was “Speedwell Bitter”, a very easy drinking and malty traditional bitter. Last was “”Pynot Porter”, a dark and sweet porter, very tasty.

Hasland Hops

Next is onto Hasland to visit “Hasland Hops”. A fantastic one roomed independent pub in the centre of Hasland Village. A really nice décor inside with wooden tables and floors. A lovely outdoor beer garden area to the rear. Greeted by Dean in here, was great chatting.

A choice of 2 cask ales behind the bar today to choose from, alongside a number of keg beers to choose from. Went with “Best Bitter” from Masham based Black Sheep Brewery, A really tasty bitter which was first brewed back in 1992.

Chesterfield Arms

My last call of the day is to the “Chesterfield Arms”, located just outside Chesterfield centre. This pub has won multiple awards over the years and since 2022 has seen the installation of its own in house brewery “Resting Devil”. The brewery can be seen through windows. They also serve homemade pizzas which smell delicious. A fab warm welcome from the team behind the bar today.

A fantastic line up of 12 cask beers, with 3 being from their own brewery. Lots of different styles to choose from. I went with “Changeling”, a light, tasty and hoppy pale ale. Need to come back here again to sample some more of their beers.

Some cracking pubs/micropubs in and around Chesterfield, shame you didn’t have time to pop into the Neptune just 2-3 minutes walk away from the Chesterfield Arms, lots of cask and Belgian beers in there.

Also great to see many cask ales on offer throughout Chesterfield comfortably below £4 a pint!
