Rail Ale Festival 2025
The Rail Ale Festival at Barrow Hill Roundhouse in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, is a unique celebration that intertwines Britain’s rich railway heritage with its vibrant real ale culture. Established in 2000, the festival marked its 25th anniversary in 2025

The festival is set within the historic Barrow Hill Roundhouse, the UK’s last surviving operational railway roundhouse, constructed in 1870. This distinctive venue, featuring a working turntable and an array of preserved steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, provides an atmospheric backdrop that sets the Rail Ale Festival apart from other beer events.

Since its inception, the Rail Ale Festival has grown both in scale and diversity. By its 15th anniversary in 2016, it featured over 300 beers and ciders, along with a variety of live music performances . The 2025 festival expanded further, offering more than 400 real ales, ciders, and craft beers, complemented by the popular Rail Ale Gin Palace and a Prosecco & Wine bar.

Live music has become a staple of the festival, with performances ranging from jazz and brass bands to rock and tribute acts. Notable highlights include Queen tribute band Flash, ska and reggae ensemble Jungle Lion, and the country-themed “Nashville @ The Roundhouse” event.

This year I was asked to give an after dinner talk at the VIP Hospitality event which was a great honour and something which I really enjoyed writing out (although it took me quite a few months). The VIP event featured a beer menu and 3 course meal served as a platter style which was absolutely stunning and delicious.

I managed to sample a number of beers from Dancing Duck Brewery Titanic Brewery Blue Monkey Brewery Boston Brewery The Engine Shed Brewery The Old Cannon Brewery and Liquid Light Brewing Company, Rascality and Tiger Tops.

Managed to catch up with a few people at the festival. Mark from Kiveton Tap, The Team at The Marlpool Brewing Co, Cath, Ian, Kim and Jane running the Festival, Roy from Little Brewing Co and Matt from The Rose and Crown Brampton. Hope you all enjoyed the festival as much as I did!
