Silkstone Common is a charming village in the Barnsley metropolitan area. It’s famous for its beautiful countryside and deep-rooted history, particularly the heartbreaking Huskar Pit Disaster of 1838. On July 4 of that year, a storm caused the Huskar Pit in Silkstone to flood, resulting in the drowning of 26 children aged between 7 and 17. They were trying to escape through a ventilation shaft when the disaster struck. This tragic event brought attention to the dangerous working conditions and spurred changes in child labour laws.
