Ales of the Unexpected is a micropub in Margate which opened in August 2013. It is located on Canterbury Road in a building that was once a fishmonger’s shop and later an antiques store, reflecting the area’s traditional local trade history. The name “Ales of the Unexpected” is inspired by the British TV series Tales of the Unexpected, known for its surprising twists—this reflects the pub’s aim to offer surprising and varied real ales. The owner, Craig Goodburn, is all about showcasing a wide range of ales from different breweries throughout the UK, not just sticking to local Kentish brews. The place has gained a reputation for its quirky décor, filled with old maps and brewery memorabilia, making it a cosy spot for beer lovers.
Inside, the space feels warm and inviting, with a narrow layout that’s packed with character. The walls are decorated with vintage world maps, old cameras, and quirky beer pump clips, giving it a cool, retro vibe. The bar serves a small but carefully chosen selection of real ales and ciders, all kept in a temperature-controlled room to keep them fresh. It’s a laid-back spot perfect for beer lovers looking for something different in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
