03/09/22 – Settle and Skipton

A day out by train heading up to the Historic North Yorkshire town of Settle. Visiting some local traditional pubs around the bustling traditional market town. Settle was currently hosting a “Flower Pot Festival”, lots of characters and interesting designs all the way around town.

The Golden Lion

A steady 5 minute walk down from the train station into town, brought us to “The Golden Lion”. This is an old coaching inn built in the 1600’s. To access one side of the pub is via a “Dwarf Door” dated 1671 but watch your head when entering this way.

A good selection of ales available here, a number being from Thwaites Brewery based in the Ribble Valley, aswell as a beer on from local Settle Brewery which is based next to the Railway Station. Went with the “Mellor Mango”, a delicious Session IPA.

A great outdoor seating area aswell as the back, leading to another exit from the pub (style like the old coaching house it is)

Royal Oak

A walk down the main street to the Royal Oak next, passing lots of small antiques and local food shops along the way. Opened in the eighteenth century, the Royal Oak was acquired by the Blackburn brewers,
Dutton’s, in 1902 and extensively remodelled by them in the mid-1930s,
creating an idealised “Olde English” panelled interior for the new breed of motorised tourists.

A choice of 3 hand pulled ales here, Timothy Taylor – Landlord, Doom Bar and one from local Settle Brewery – Jericho Blonde. Went with the Settle Brewery beer, a refreshing pale ale.

Talbot Arms

At the other end of town is “Talbot Arms”, a traditional pub with a huge beer garden at the back of the pub. It claims to be the oldest pub in town and dates from 1642.

A good range of ales available here including Roosters, Ilkley Brewery, Settle Brewery and Theakstons. Went with a pint of the Ilkley “Juno”, and some home cooked food to go with it.

Skipton

The Railway

Back on the train now from Settle to Skipton to drop into a couple of pubs on the way home. The first being “The Railway”, which is a good 10 minute walk away from the Railway Station oddly.

Busy pub with two small rooms. Choice of 3 hand pulled beers here from Saltaire Brewery, Wainwrights and Dark Horse Brewery. Went with the Dark Horse Brewery “Hetton” which is based in Skipton.

The Growling Shrew

Last call of the day was to a bottle shop and tap room not far from the Railway Station. Its been open a few years but has recently got an on-licence so has a few small tables inside, and you can choose any can or bottle and drink it inside.

A great range to choose from here to suit all styles with drinks ranging from light to dark, sours, mead, ciders and lots more. Enjoyed a can of “Passionfruit and Apricot Belgian Waffle Sour” from New Bristol Brewery. Finished the day off well.
