BUY ME A PINT

A local visit today to the historic Roman town of Castleford. Several Real Ale and Craft Beer bars here, alongside a visit to one of the only pubs where all beers are served from wooden casks.

Market Tap

The first call of the day is to the “Market Tap”, a former pawnbrokers which opened as a bottle and can takeaway shop during the COVID Lockdown before transforming into a great bar opening in September 2020. Set over 2 floors (the top floor opening at certain times and can be hired for special occasions). Outdoor seating is also available.

A great selection of 10 keg beers, 2 real ciders alongside a newly installed Cask Beer line, today serving “Yorkshire Gold” from Leeds Brewery. I went with the “Key Lime Sour” from Durham based S43 brewery. A refreshingly tart and sweet sour beer.

Thieves Market

The next call is a couple of minutes walk away is “Thieves Market”, an amazing Asian Street Food venue which opened in November 2022. A great selection of dishes and sides can be found here, whether you have a favourite or want to try something different. I went with the Buttermilk Butter Chicken with some Bang Bang Chips. Delicious!

A great range of keg beers here from local breweries “Kirkstall” and “Northern Monk”, along with a couple from Manchester based “Cloudwater”. I went with “Happy” from Cloudwater, a full flavoured and juicy hazy session beer.

The Doghouse

Near enough over the road from Thieves Market is “The Doghouse”. A craft beer bar run by Little Black Dog Brewery based in Carlton near Goole. A bar packed full of beer related artwork on the walls inside. Also has an outdoor covered seating area at the back.

Another brilliant range of keg beers, alongside 5 cask beers and a number of ciders, so lots to choose from. I went with another sour “Rhubarb & Custard Session Sour” from Vault City based in Portobello.

Yorkshire Craft Beers

A short stroll down to the riverside where the historic Queens Mill is located. As well as being home to a Tearooms, Coffee Company and several other places there is a Bottle Shop and Taproom, this first started as a bottle shop alone known as “Yorkshire Craft Beers”, before evolving into having several keg beers and spirits to drink in. Outdoor seating is also available.

On top of the hundreds of bottles and cans in the shop, a great selection of keg beers are also available ranging widely in styles and strengths. Spotted another Vault City sour here “Strawberry Sundae”, so went with this. A refreshing and tart sour beer packed full of strawberries.

The Junction

Final call in Castleford is to “The Junction”, home of Beers from the Wood. One of the only pubs in the country where all cask beers are served from wooden casks. A great traditional pub with wood fires, penny raffles, beef dripping on bread and much more.

4 cask beers from the wood were available today, these being from “Old Mill Brewery” in Snaith, and Sheffield based “Stancill Brewery”. I went with “Jester” from Old Mill Brewery. A great tasting pale ale with citrus notes brewed with UK grown Jester Hops.
