BUY ME A PINT

A second day out along the Sussex Coast today, a trip around Shoreham (Brighton City Airport), followed by pubs in Shoreham-by-the-Sea, Lancing and Worthing. Again lots of great micropubs and independent pubs to visit.

Palate

A short walk from Shoreham-by-the-Sea train station is a small bottle shop and tasting room thats worth a drop into. Lots of cans and bottles from the many local breweries. Im sure you will find something in here that catches your eye.

Duke of Wellington

A short walk to the east side of town brings me to the “Duke of Wellington”. Owned by former director and brewer at Dark Star Brewery, Rob Jones.

A fantastic selection of beers on cask and keg to choose from in here. I started off with “Phoenix” from Bedlam Brewery based in Plumpton, followed by “American Pale” from Duke of Wellington Brewhouse (by Downlands Brewery) to one of Darkstars Recipes.

Even has a hidden beer garden at the back (very spacious and well done out). Also check out the door to the gents toilets (I didn’t end up in another dimension)

Old Star Ale and Cider House

Next onto a Micropub I have visited a couple of times in the past, which originally opened in August 2014 in part of the closed “Star Inn”, hence its name. Great warm welcome here from Jon and Anna who took over in 2019.

A choice of two cask beers on today both gravity served, along with a keg beer and a lager. I started with “Double Act” from 360’ Brewery based in Sheffield Park followed by “Session IPA” from Langham Brewery based in Lodsworth. Both really great beers and locally sourced.

Also a selection of cans and bottles here from different breweries (and of course a great cider selection)!

Stanley Ale House

A short train ride from Shoreham-by-Sea to Lancing and a 5 minute walk to “Stanley Ale House”. A micropub I have visited in the past a couple of times.

A great choice of four cask beers on here. I went with “Best” from Downloads Brewery based in Small Dole, West Sussex. A great traditional best bitter. Several keg beers also available here.

Bottle & Jug

Another short train journey, this time up to Worthing. A short walk from the station and over the crossing brings me to “Bottle & Jug”. A great bottle/can shop and tasting room.

Aswell as a great can and bottle shop, they have 4 leg beers on available to drink in. I went with “Pupa” from Vibrant Forest Brewery based in Hardley, Hampshire. A delicious Hazy Pale Ale.

The Brooksteed

Near enough over the road to “The Brooksteed”. A micropub which opened in 2014 and under new ownership in 2017. A really warm welcome from John and the team, and lots of great locals here to chat to. Love the “Great Doctor once Said” sign aswell!

A great selection of both cask and keg here, another micropub ive visited twice in the past. Two new breweries for me here today. Started with “Like Clockwork”, from Loud Shirt Brewing Co in Brighton followed by “Easy Roller” from Escapist Brew Co based in Chichester. A great outdoor area at the front and back of this micropub aswell.

Anchored in Worthing

A short 15 minute walk to another micropub ive visited several times in the past “Anchored in Worthing”. This was the first micropub in Worthing (and in Sussex) when it opened in 2013. A warm welcome as always from the owner Nigel and great chatting with some of the locals in the pub.

Local ales on as always here so it did not disappoint. The last few times I have been here ive always had a paddle of the 3 beers on offer so went with the same again. Started with “Abbey Pale” from Battle Brewery based in Battle (a new Brewery for me), followed by “Phoenix” from Bedlam Brewery in Plumpton and “English Pale Ale” from Lakedown Brewery in Burwash.

Toad in the Hole

A short 15 minute walk heading in the direction of the train station to “Toad in the Hole”, owner by local brewery “Hand Brew Co” who started off in Brighton in 2016 before moving to a new brewery in Worthing. Interestingly “Toad in the Hole” is a popular pub game played mainly in Sussex with the world championships being held in Lewes.

A great selection on here both cask and keg. Started on the cask beers with “Loral” (American Pale Ale) and “High 5” (Oat Pale). Before moving onto their keg beers starting with “Shaka” and moving onto “Lobo”, a delicious hazy pale ale. Great chatting to Phil in here who lives nearby. Cheers for the Beer!
