BUY ME A PINT

Started out the day visiting the Bow Legged Beagle and HOP in Bromborough, Handymans Supermarket Brewpub in Wavertree, Neptune Brewerys Beerhouse in Maghull and a number of venues in Southport – Beer Inn, The Guest House and Masons Arms.

Bow Legged Beagle – Bromborough

The first call of the day was to the “Bow Legged Beagle – Bromborough”. A train into Liverpool and changing at Liverpool Central onto the Wirral Line. A short walk from Bromborough Rake station into town brings me to the Micropub. “Bow Legged Beagle” opened in March 2020 in a former shop unit.

A great selection of 4 cask ales, 1 flat cider and 10 keg beers, alongside a fridge packed full of cans and bottles. I started with “Ostara” from Wrexham based Big Hand Brewery. A delicious session bitter. I went onto Green Room from Cornish based Pipeline Brewery.

Was great to have a chat with owner Andy who is also opening one in Heswall shortly. I had planned to visit the one in New Brighton, I enjoyed visit here a few years ago, but train delays due to flooding meant I couldnt visit it today. Their beer selection is below.

HOP

A 15 minute walk brought me to “HOP”, a small Micropub located near Bromborough Merseyrail Station. A warm welcome from manager Lewis and a really modern feel to the pub.

A good choice of beers again here, with 4 cask beers, 14 keg lines and 2 fridges full of a variety of cans and bottles. I went with “Citradel” from The Oaks Brewing Company. A tasty double hopped pale ale.

Handymans Supermarket

After a mess with the trains due to flooding at Hooton, I managed to get back into Liverpool City Centre and jump on an 86 bus out to Wavertree (bus carries onto Liverpool Airport). Here I visited “Handymans Supermarket”. This brewpub opened in August 2017 in a former hardware store (hence the name).

Handyman Brewery is in mezzanine above the bar, the head brewer being Gaz who used to brew for Gubberish and before that Mad Hatter Brewery.

A great selection of beers here. Lots on both cask and keg with a number being from their own brewery. I started with one of their sour beers “Loganberry Sour 32”, a really fruity and tart sour packed with flavour.

My second drink was one of their own bottles beers (theres lots to choose from). “Insert Gose Pun” was my choice, a very interesting Orange, Lemon and Basil Gose. Some really interesting flavours which all worked well together.

Neptune Beerhouse

A choice of transport methods to get to my next call. The best and quickest way was 2 buses from Handyman Supermarket. “Neptune Beerhouse” is in Maghull and only opened here in May 2023. Id seen these at Amity Fest earlier in the year so was great to catch up again!

A fab place which has been well done out and is really welcoming. 8 keg beers and usually 4 cask beers (but Liverpool playing today so only 2 on). A fridge full of cans aswell. I went with “Galene”, a great tasting session ale with tropical, mango and orange flavours coming through.

Back on the bus from here to Southport to finish the last few venues of my trip away.

Beer Inn

My first call in Southport is to “Beer Inn”. Ive been here several times in the past under different names. A narrow bar and bottle shop which specialises in German and Belgian bottles but also has a large number from the UK and elsewhere. Outdoor seating at the front on Lord Street.

Took me ages trying to decide which I wanted, but went with a Belgian Sour beer. “Summer Sour” from Belgian Fort Lapin Brewery. A ver light and tart kettle sour.

The Guest House

A few minutes walk to a street off Lord Street, to a listed building with an impressive frontage of the pub. A friendly welcoming pub with three separate wood panelled drinking areas.

5 cask beers on the bar today aswell as a cider. Went with “Eagles Dare” from local Southport Brewery, a delicious easy drinking malty pale ale.

The Masons Arms

My last call is to “The Masons Arms”, a five minute walk from the last pub. The only Robinsons Pub in Southport and a really warm welcome from Victoria and the team here. A lovely community feel in this pub.

Five cask beers and a cider on the bar. Great to see a good selection of light and dark beers. I went with “Border Bitter” from Magic Dragon Brewing in Wrexham. A new brewery for me and a really great tasting bitter.
