BUY ME A PINT

Based in Scarborough for a few days with trips out to Whitby and Guisborough. Scarborough is rich in history with its castle perched high above the North and South Bays, and a town which is proud to be Britain’s first seaside resort. Visited Craft, Stumble Inn, North Riding Brewpub and Scholar’s Bar over the trip.

Craft Bar

My first call was to the “Craft Bar”, located a short walk from Scarborough Railway Station opposite the Stephen Joseph Theatre. A really busy bar which was hosting a comedy evening by local Whitby based group “The Laughing Lobster”, which was outstanding and great calibre of acts some of which had travelled some distance. A really warm welcome despite how busy it was.

A fantastic range of drinks, today having 4 cask beers, a huge selection of keg beers alongside several fridges full of cans and bottles to drink in or takeaway. Had a few drinks here whilst enjoying the comedy evening. I started with “Danish Berry Pudding” a fruity sour from Vault City Brewing before moving onto “Jammie Biscuit”, the name saying it all. A tangy sour from Yonder Brewing. Next was “To the Stars”, a sour packed full of fruit but Alcohol Free between Mash Gang and Vault City. My final beer was “Chocolate Dipped Strawberries”, another sour from Vault City. Such a great range of styles available here.

The Stumble Inn

Thursday night takes me to “The Stumble Inn”, a great micropub a short walk from Scarborough Railway Station heading away from the town centre. This was Scarborough’s first Micropub and having visited a number of times over the years, have always had a friendly welcome and a very busy one roomed pub. A great outside seated area as well.

A great selection of beers here being 7 cask ales, 9 different ciders and a number of keg options available on the back wall. I started with “Chinook” from Kent based Caveman Brewery, a very easy drinking pale ale. I went onto a beer brewed by the owners of the Micropub under the brewery name “Brewdir”. The beer I had was called “Prufen Mk.11”, a really tasty pale ale.

North Riding Hotel

A short walk from the town centre towards Peasholm Park on the North side of Scarborough brings me to the “North Riding Hotel”. The building was built originally in the 1860s and looks really impressive outside. The inside is beautifully done out and very traditional. A central bar with a bar area at one side and a quieter snug room at the other. Was great chatting to Landlady Karen this evening.

A great selection of beers on the bar having 5 cask beers (3 of which are brewed in the brewery underneath the pub as “North Riding Brewpub”), alongside a North Riding Beer and one from Marble Brewery in Manchester. I went with the trio of North Riding Brewpub beers. Started with “Peasholme Pale Ale”, a delicious easy drinking pale ale, onto “Target Mild”, a style you don’t see too over recently but a Mild beer packed full of flavour. Lastly went with “Mosaic”. All 3 beers were really easy drinking and packed full of flavour with great aromas.

Scholar’s Bar

My last call of the trip is to “Scholar’s Bar”. A pub located at the rear of Scarborough’s town centre. A really popular bar which has a number of rooms inside, around a large corner bar. Really warm welcome on a Saturday night from the bar staff.

A great line up of 9 cask beers on the bar, a great range of styles alongside a number of keg options to choose from. I started with “Ratman and Robin” from Huddersfield based Rat Brewery. A sessionable pale ale. I moved onto “Strawberry Sencha” a collaboration between Brew York and Shiny Brewery. A lychee and strawberry green tea pale, really fruity and flavourful.
