Another bus journey from Scarborough taking me to Guisborough via Whitby. Guisborough is a historic market town with a rich history dating back to the 12th century. It is also home to the Guisborough Priory ruins which are a popular tourist attraction. Started here with a visit to the Brass Monkey Beer Boutique on the high street, before heading out to Guisborough Brewery.

Brass Monkey Beer Boutique

My first call in Guisborough was to “Brass Monkey Beer Boutique” which is located on the main high street. This opened in December 2021 and is a great bar featuring a number of fridges packed full of lots of different cans and bottles ranging in styles to either drink in or takeaway, lots of great snacks and a lovely seating area inside (and an outside area for warmer months).

A great line up of 10 keg beers ranging in styles and strengths to choose from. I started with “Rue de Soda” from DEYA Brewing Company based in Cheltenham. A very light and crisp pale ale. I went onto a can of sour beer from Edinburgh based Vault City Brewing. “Blueberry Banana Choc Chip Double Shake”. Packed full of flavour.

Guisborough Brewery

A short 10 minute walk off the high street in an industrial estate located behind a retail park brings me to Guisborough Brewery. The brewery alongside a tap room currently open Fridays and Saturdays. Using a 5 barrel setup, all beers are brewed on site. Was great to meet owner and brewer Robin. Worth checking out “Finn’s Bakery and Catering” next door for some amazing pastry’s, cakes and more.

A really simple and laid back seating area to the side of the bar, which overlooks the brewing setup. Hosts events such as Acoustic Music Evenings and Live Music.

A choice of 3 cask ales on the bar today, with another 2 available in bottles. All beers are brewed in a set rotation. The three on the bar today were as follows (I tried all 3). Started with “VYPA”, a brilliant tasting IPA with a great aroma, went onto “Hinterland”, a Kolsch style lager, something different for me but tasted great. Lastly I had “Phoenix”, a Red Ale and a style you don’t see around very often. A really delicious beer with subtle malt and a great hint of smokiness. Alchemy and VYPA were available in bottles.
