Headed out to Preston today but instead of the centre I went onto the outskirts visiting the Ashton-on-Ribble and Penwortham areas. Started in the Ashton-on-Ribble area, home of Tulketh Mill which was an Edwardian former cotton-spinning mill. Started here with “The Tap End”. I then headed over to Penwortham, with a long street of pubs, restaurants and independent shops. Started here visiting “1260 Craft & Crust”, and onto “Tap & Vine”, “No 16 on the Hill” and “GINjarALE”

The Tap End

My first call of the day is to “The Tap End” in the Ashton-on-Ribble area of Preston. I jumped on the number 35 bus from Preston to get here. This Micropub opened in June 2021 in a former card and gift shop. A beautifully done out micropub with wood and metal, with the bar at the back left when you enter. A great warm welcome from Simon and a couple of the regulars.

Four cask ales on the bar here, alongside a choice of keg beers and a fridge full of cans and bottles to choose from. I started with “Bungle” from Congleton based Beartown Brewery. A delicious 3 hopped pale ale, packed full of flavour. I went onto local nano brewery Snowhill and their “Blonded”, a light and refreshing blonde ale.

I then took the 35 bus back into Preston centre, headed towards the Railway Station then onto the X2 out to Penwortham.

1260 Craft & Crust

My first call here is to “1260 Craft & Crust”. This Pizza Restaurant and Craft Beer Venue opened in December 2016 in a former Booths Supermarket. The name links back to Penwortham’s past with 1260 being the year that it was first recorded. A lovely venue with seating at the front in the sun and a deceiving inside which goes back further than it looks. Really modern feel and some lovely smells from the pizzas being cooked.

A great line up of keg beers ranging in styles and strengths available on the bar alongside a cask ale and a handpull cider. I went with the cask ale from Manchester based Sureshot Brewery. “Small Man’s Wetsuit”, a delicious hazy pale ale packed full of flavour from the 3 different hops used.

Tap and Vine

A short walk up the street brings me to my second call in Penwortham which is to “Tap and Vine”. This was Penwortham’s first Micropub which opened in 2018 in a former arts and crafts shop. A lovely covered and uncovered outside area leads into a lovely bar area, done out in wood with a smaller room to the rear with a wood burning stove. Really warm welcome and great chatting to a few of the regulars.

A great selection of 4 cask ales from 4 different breweries in a range of styles. A number of keg beers were also available. I went with “Downtime” from Kendal based Hawkshead Brewery. A very crisp and refreshing session pale ale with some lovely fruity notes.

No.16 on the Hill

Another short walk to my third call which is into “No.16 on the Hill”. This opened in March 2020, a lovely small Micropub with a lovely outside area at the front, some of which is covered and some seats in the sun. A beautifully decorated inside looking very smart and different to a lot I have been in.

2 cask beers on the bar in here today along with a number of keg beers. I went with “Extravinious” from Lancashire based Rivington Brewing Co. A delicious American Pale Ale with lots of great flavours from the trio of hops used in this beer.

GINjarALE

My last call in Penwortham was to “GINjarALE”. This Micropub opened in December 2019 and was the second to open on the street. A small one roomed Micropub with a great outdoor area at the front. The inside is a very relaxing and homely space with sofas and other comfy seating. A really warm welcome from behind the bar in here.

A line up of 2 cask beers on the bar in here alongside a number of keg beers. I decided to go with “Amber Necker” from North Yorkshire based Pennine Brewing Co. One of their core beers, a session amber beer which has been brewed using English and American hops. A very smooth and creamy beer.
