BUY ME A PINT

A day out to Preston. A city packed full of great pubs and small bars so lots of choice. Preston itself is known for a couple of quirky features including being home to the tallest spire of any parish church in England to having the longest continuous row of red telephone boxes

Black Horse

My first calling point of the day was to the “Black Horse”. A stunning Grade II listed Victorian Pub with an impressive tiled bar and wall, along with a mosaic floor. It is listed on CAMRAs National Pub Heritage Inventory. Several small rooms which have been kept amazingly well. The pub is run by Robinsons Brewery.

A great selection of 8 real ales, alongside a number of ciders to choose from. I went with “Galaxy” from Essex based Brentwood Brewing Co. An easy drinking single hopped ale.

Guild Ale House

A short walk past the indoor market to “Guild Ale House”, a few doors away from Prestons Guild Hall. This micropub opened in February 2016 and has a great airy feel and high ceilings. A room downstairs with a small lounge in the corner and another room upstairs.

A great choice of 7 real ales on the bar, alongside a selection of keg beers and cans/bottles. The ales offer a nice range of styles. I went with “Faithless 170”, a small IPA from RedWillow Brewery. a tasty triple hopped ale.

The Orchard

A short walk around the corner to “The Orchard”, sister pub to the Guild Ale House. Located inside the Grade II listed covered indoor market. This bar opened in March 2018. A lot of the decor is utilised from the old market wooden boards.

A great selection of both keg (10) and cask (2) to choose from with a wide variety of styles. I went with “Fell Walker” from Bowness Bay Brewing. An easy drinking session pale ale. Some great seating outside to the side and at the front here aswell.

Priest Town Brewing

Next to The Orchard is a bottle/can shop run by Priest Town Brewing. Worth a drop in if you want a few beers for the train home. A great selection of styles to choose from.

Plau

Another short walk up Friargate to “Plau”, a bar which opened in November 2018 after more than 3 years of restoration work to the 18th century building. The original name of the bar was “The Plough Inn” which closed in 1923.

The vault below the main bar which has been dug out looks amazing. Theres a well in the centre (condensation made the view difficult today), which is 40 feet deep and over 609 years old.

A great selection of beers on the bar here. 3 cask beers and 14 keg beers to choose from. Went with a sour beer from Vault City in here. “Strawberry Sundae”, a fruity and tart beer.

Chain House Brewing Co

Located behind Plau is “Chain House Brewing Co”. The brewery started out in a garage in Longton in Autumn 2017, and moved to these nee premises in Preston, opening in November 2022.

Lots of choice again here on the bar with 2 cask beers, 10 keg beers alongside a lager and a cider. I went with one of their one brewed beers. “30m2”, a mouth watering hazy IPA. Really enjoyed this beer.

A small outdoor seating area at the rear was a great place to sit and enjoy the days sunny weather.

Plug & Taps

A short walk heading back into town brings me to a small bar called “Plug & Taps”. This bar opened in June 2018. Outdoor seating at the front here located perfectly in the sun.

A great line up of 10 keg beers and 4 cask beers alongside a fridge packed full of cans and bottles. The bar was currently running an Azvex Brewery Tap Takeover (based in Liverpool).

I went for “MANA” from Azvex Brewery. An amazing tropical fruity smoothie sour beer.

Hopwoods Tap House

From here I had a short walk up to “Hopwoods Tap House”. This opened in March 2022 in the historic premises of W.H & J. Woods’ Tobacconist, from which its name is derived.

Really spacious and well laid out inside with the bar on the right as entering. A large selection of keg beers alongside a choice of 3 cask beers. I went with “Haybob” from local Farm Yard Brew Co. A really sessionable Golden Ale.

Wings & Beer Co.

A short walk heading back in the direction of the railway station (and down a side street) brings me to “Wings & Beer Co.”. Time for food here with some great offerings of Wings, Burgers and more.

3 cask beers, 2 real ciders and a large keg beer selection to choose from in here. Went with a favourite of mine “Cwtch“ from Welsh brewery “Tiny Rebel”. A tasty Red ale, a style you dont see around as much as id like.

NIKO

A couple of streets up brings me to “NIKO”, a specialist craft beer and wine shop/bar. This opened in July 2021. Seating outside at the front on the street aswell as inside.

A selection of 9 keg beers, but with lots of bottles and cans to choose from on top of this. “Passionfruit Margarita” from Yonder Brewing was my choice. A tart salty sour beer, very refreshing.

Winckley Street Ale House

My last call before heading back for the train was to “Winckley Street Ale House”. A really popular bar with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. First opening as the Otters Pocket in November 2018,closing in March 2020 for renovation and opening as “Winckley Street Ale House”. The bar is inside a former shop unit.

A wide selection of beers to choose from here, 10 keg lines, 4 cask lines and a fridge full of cans. Another sour beer from Vault City for me. Red Jammie White Choc Chip Stuffed Cookie Dough”, the name says it all. The “Brazil Nut porter” from North Riding Brewery was also delicious.

Looks like a great town for a drink. You’ve got a few typos in there including the hilarious Wongs & Beer 🙂
