BUY ME A PINT

A bit of a trek all over today starting in Dorking to visit Cobbetts Micropub and Tap, onto Horsham to Horsham Brewery Tap, Micropubs in Billinghurst and Bognor Regis. Brewhouse project in Arundel and finishing with two brewery taps in Brighton.

All journeys today were done on Southern Rail using a Day Saver ticket. Can be purchased 3 days in advance and costs £22.

Cobbetts

A train from Eastbourne changing at Brighton and Horsham to get to Dorking and a 25 minute walk up the main high street brings me to “Cobbetts”. A Micropub and bottle/can shop that I last visited in 2017. A warm welcome from Helen and Tim

On entering the pub the first half is a bottle shop with the back half being a micropub with cask, keg and cider available (or bottles to drink in).

Six kegs beers, two cask beers and three ciders available today. I started with “Handlebar Moustache” from local brewery Trailhead Brew Co, followed by a bottle of “Sourdough Pale” from Crumbs Brewery in Reigate and finishing with “Collusion” on cask from Surrey Hills Brewery.

Horsham Brewery Tap

A short train ride from Dorking to Horsham and a 10 minute walk out of town brought me to “Horsham Brewery Tap” based in an industrial estate a few doors down from the brewery. Great welcome here from Rohan and the team here!

A great selection on here with eight beers on keg and three on cask, with a full explanation of each beer before ordering, the staff seemed really passionate about the beers they brew which is great to see.

I started off with “Victory” on Cask, a delicious Pale Ale followed by “Kerve Ball” on keg, a tasty and refreshing hazy pale ale. Finished on “Causeway”, a light and session pale ale.

The Billi Tap

Another short train hop from Horsham to Billingshurt. Got chatting to a local guy called Matt in Horsham Brewery Tap and was heading the same way. A 12/13 minute walk from the station brings me to “The Billi Tap”

A great bar featuring beers from local breweries “Brolly” and “Little Monster”. And its so good to see someone like Martin behind the bar being so passionate about beers.

A great selection on here so ended up with a flight after my first beer. Started with “Uncle Dave” a delicious hazy pale from Brolly Brewing followed by “Base Camp” Lager from Little Monster, “YUL” from Little Monster, a juicy pale ale and finishing off with “Acid Monster” and “Wild Monster”, 5% and 8% fruity sour beers.

The Brewhouse Project

A jump back on the train to Arundel and a steady walk around 15 minutes to “The Brewhouse Project”. This is a joint venture between Arundel Brewery and Edgcumbes Coffee to create a brewery taproom alongside a great coffee venue.

A choice of 8 keg beers and one cask beer served from the opposite end of the bar. I went with “Printworks”, a 3.4% tasty table beer, really easy drinking.

The Dog & Duck

No onto the last call in West Sussex before heading back to Brighton. This time off the train at Bognor Regis. “The Dog & Duck” is about a 6 minute walk from the railway station. It opened in June 2018, but moved to the current larger premises around the corner in July 2021. Lovely welcome here from owner Jamie.

Two cask beers, two handpull ciders on the bar alongside a number of keg lines and a brilliant can/bottle selection. I started with “Best Bitter” from Goldmatk Craft Beers based in nearby Arundel. Then went with a can of “SUP?” from Bestens Brewery in Haywards Heath (a new brewery for me). Really busy in here and great chatting with some of the regulars.

A bit of a longer journey back from Bognor Regis to Brighton, changing at Barnham. If you get some time here while changing theres a really good fish and chip shop a couple of minutes walk away.

Brighton Bier

A taxi ride from Brighton Railway Station to an industrial estate not far from the Marina. Two brewery taps located across from each other. Headed into “Brighton Bier” first.

The brewery started in 2012 at the Hand in Hand in Kempton and now brew at this location. A great selection of beers here ranging in styles and abvs. I went with their newest beer “Still Invisible”, a tasty hazy IPA at 5.5%.

Loud Shirt Brewing

Near enough opposite Brighton Bier is “Loud Shirt Brewing” and their taproom. The current team took over the original Loud Shirt Brewery and launched in September 2022.

Lots of choice here again with six beers on keg alongside some of their canned beers. I started with “Hazed & Confused”, a fruit hazy session IPA, really tasty. I followed with “El-Dorado American Pale Ale”, a lovely deep golden coloured beer and lots of good flavours from the beer.

Hi Scott. Really enjoyed your write up. The Surrey Hills Brewery beer you had at Cobbets is actually Collusion, not Collision. Its named such as it’s a beer brewed in ‘collusion’ jointly with SHB and Cobbets. 👍

Many thanks Scott, your blog has introduced me to some really interesting places, many of which I had no idea were there.
Cobbetts is a great place, querky and a must visit imo.
The Brewhouse Project is a cracking place and I tend to drift over there when travelling through Sussex to get takeaway beer from the many rural (ie hard to reach) breweries scattered throughout the county.
This year I’m attempting the Sussex CAMRA Ale Trail which won’t be easy since I live in Hampshire, and one of the pubs is the Old Boot Inn over at Seaford. It was through researching that place that I came across your blog. I noticed that you went to the Steamworks at Sleaford too, that’s also on the trail. Looking forward to it already.
Keep up the great work Scott.
