BUY ME A PINT

A day out to the beautiful North Yorkshire market town of Northallerton. Some really historic and interesting pubs in this small town. Includes visits to the local Micropub (Stumble Inn) and a pub which is down as of Regional Historic Importance (Masons Arms). Check out the Local “Bayonet Brewery” aswell which started in October 2021.

Train journey north from Leeds this morning (some speed restrictions en route) up to Northallerton with Transpennine Express. A brisk 10 minutes walk from the station into town.

The Tickle Toby Inn

First pub I came to was The Tickle Toby Inn, allegedly named after a local Highwayman. 3 hand pulls here but only one being served which was Black Sheep – Best Bitter. Always a good beer. Clean layout and very comfortable inside.

The Standard

Right at the very end of the main street is “The Standard”, named after “The Battle of the Standard” which took place 3 Miles north of Northallerton at Cowton Moor on August 22nd 1138 AD.

The beer garden here used to be home to a Jet Provost Aircraft but has recently being relocated to a local Museum.

3 ales available here. Wainwright, Bradfield – Farmers Blonde and UBU – Purity. Great traditional pub inside and the food being cooked smells delicious.

Oddfellows Arms

Very traditional pub with friendly locals upon walking in. Lovely layout inside which was very welcoming and comfy. 3 Cask Ales on here – 2 from Ossett Brewery (White Rat/Blonde) and one from Pennine Brewery (Good Try). Hadnt seen the Pennine beer before so decided on that. Lovely Amber beer.

Also on the bar on Keg was Bayonet Brewery – One Pip Wonder (4.5% Hazy IPA). Bayonet Brewery is Northallerton based and was setup in October 2021. Described as “A soft, juicy session brew with an inviting haze that is bursting with notes of Citrus, Passion Fruit and Berry”.

Zetland Winestore

Upon researching Bayonet Brewery before heading up here, I found that Zetland Winestore stocked their beers. After preordering a couple, I dropped into pick them up. The shop has a great range of beers (Cans, Bottles) from local breweries and other bigger breweries. Really good place to drop into to pick up a few beers to take home with you!

The Masons Arms

Situated on a corner is the Masons Arma. This pub is listed as a Heritage Pub – “Interior of Some Regional Importance”. The bar servery as you walk in is very impressive and original. Lots of other features still remain including front smoke room (pictured) and entrance vestibule. One beer on here which was Timothy Taylor – Landlord and was very well kept.

Origins

Replacing an older bar (after a refurb) is Origins. Very up market and modern decor and serving 3 Cask ales and a range of keg beers. Decided on Rugate – White Dragon. Nice pale with a hint of Lemongrass

Stumble Inn Micropub

Located down a side alley, The Stumble Inn Micropub is a great little bar, on entering the bar was really busy. 3 Pale Ales from Copper Dragon, Elland and Durham Breweries along with a Sticky Toffee Porter from Three Brothers Brewing. A great range of ciders and several craft keg lines on aswell. Even though its local to me, the Elland beer id not seen before so went with a pint of Globe Trotter.

The Little Tanner

Down a small alleyway this hidden pub consists of one room downstairs and one upstairs. 3 hand pulls on the bar – 2 being used this visit, both with Copper Dragon beers. IPA and 1816. Great wall of bottles as you walk in aswell (lots of bottles from micro breweries).

The Golden Lion

An old coaching house which is now listed in the centre of town. Very traditional pub and restaurant. Has a covered well inside the main bar (pictured). 3 Cask ales on (Tetleys, Wainwrights and Camerons).
